Miss-Clause-Hat-Free-Crochet-Pattern

A fun look for the gift giving gal!

Sizes:
Toddler (Child, Teen, Adult)
Head 16 (18.5, 20.5, 22.5)
Height 6 (7, 7.5, 8)

Yarn:
Worsted Weight (sample is made with Red Heart Super Saver)

Hook:
US H/8 (5mm), or whatever size gets the correct gauge

Gauge:
14 hdc and 11 rows of hdc in a 4” square

Other Notions:
Yarn needle for weaving in ends.

Hdc ~ half double crochet

Hat Top

Ch 3, sl st into first ch to form a ring
Rnd 1: ch2 (counts as first hdc here and throughout hat top and body) 7 hdc in ring, sl st into top of beg ch2 (8 hdc)<
Rnd 2: ch2, hdc in same st, (2hdc in next st) 7 times, sl st into top of beg ch2 (16 hdc)
Rnd 3: ch2, hdc in same st, hdc in next st, (2hdc in next st, hdc in next st) 7 times, sl st into top of beg ch2 (24 hdc)
Rnd 4: ch2, hdc in same st, hdc in next 2 sts, (2hdc in next st, hdc in next 2 sts) 7 times, sl st into top of beg ch2 (32 hdc)

Rnd 1~5: ch2, hdc around, sl st into top of beg ch2 (56 (64, 72, 80) hdc)
Rnd 6: (use contrasting color) *sk1, 5hdc in next st, sk1, sl st in next st, rep from * around (the last sl st will be in the same st as the first)
Rnd 7: ch2, 2hdc in same st, *sk 2 hdc, sl st in next hdc, sk 2 hdc, 3hdc in next sl st, rep from * around, sk 2 hdc, sl st in next hdc, sl st in top of beg ch2

Rnd 8: (switch back to main color) ch2, hdc around, sl st into top of beg ch2 (56 (64, 72, 80) hdc)
Rep rnd 8:  1 (3, 4, 4) more times (or to desired hat height, half way down ears is recommended), move onto ear flaps

Ear Flaps
hdc2tog instructions:yo, insert hook in next st, yo, pull through (3 loops on hook), yo, insert hook in next st, yo, pull through (5 loops on hook), yo, pull through all loops on hook

Half-Double-Crochet-Two-Together

Row 1: ch2 (does not count as hdc for ear flaps,) hdc in each of next 8 (10, 12, 12) sts, ch, turn
Row 2: sc each of next 8 (10, 12, 12) sts, ch2, turn
*size toddler move onto row 7
*size child move onto row 5
Row 3: *sizes teen and adult only* hdc2tog, hdc in each of next 8 sts, hdc2tog, ch, turn
Row 4: *sizes teen and adult only* sc each of next 10 sts, ch2, turn
Row 5: *sizes child, teen and adult only* hdc2tog, hdc in each of next 6 sts, hdc2tog, ch, turn
Row 6: *sizes child, teen and adult only* sc each of next 8 sts, ch2, turn
Row 7: hdc2tog, hdc in each of next 4 sts, hdc2tog, ch, turn
Row 8: sc each of next 6 sts, ch2, turn
Row 9: hdc2tog, hdc in each of next 2 sts, hdc2tog, cut yarn

Starting next to the end of row 1 of ear flap, skip 16 (17, 18, 19) sts along bottom of hat body and attach yarn, make 2ndear flap in same manner as first, but do not cut or end off yarn after finishing flap.

Finishing
Switch to contrasting color and ch1, sc in same st, sc in each st around entire hat (2sc in sides of each hdc on sides of ear flaps), sl st into first sc, cut yarn and end off. Weave in ends.

Miss-Clause-Hat-Base

Cut 60 pieces of yarn 36” long. Weave 30 pieces of yarn from top of hat down one side and through ear flap (see photos) leave 6” tails at top of hat.

Cut a 12” piece of yarn and tie it tightly around the base of the tassel (at top of hat.) Weave the ends up through middle of the tassel, then clip tassel to desired length.

Lastly, braid the ends of the yarn hanging from the ear flaps. Tie the bottom of the braids into a knot, and clip (or don’t.)
