Miss Clause Hat - free crochet pattern by Jessie At Home - 2Pin

Sizes:
Baby (Toddler, Child, Adult)
Head 16 (18.5, 20.5, 22.5)
Height 6 (7, 7.5, 8)

Yarn:
Worsted Weight (sample is made with Red Heart with Love)

Hook:
US H/8 (5mm), or whatever size gets the correct gauge

Gauge:
14 hdc and 11 rows of hdc in a 4” square

Other Notions:
Yarn needle for weaving in ends.

Ch – chain
Hdc – half double crochet
Hdc2tog – half double crochet 2 together, instructions included
Rnd – round
Sl st – slip stitch

Miss Clause Hat Top

Ch 3, sl st into first ch to form a ring
Rnd 1: With White, ch 2 (counts as first hdc here and throughout hat top and body), 7 hdc in ring, sl st into top of beginning ch 2. – {8 hdc}
Rnd 2: Ch 2, hdc in same st, (2 hdc in next st) 7 times, sl st into top of beginning ch 2. – {16 hdc}
Rnd 3: Ch 2, hdc in same st, hdc in next st, (2 hdc in next st, hdc in next st) 7 times, sl st into top of beginning ch 2. – {24 hdc}
Rnd 4: Ch 2, hdc in same st, hdc in next 2 sts, (2 hdc in next st, hdc in next 2 sts) 7 times, sl st into top of beginning ch 2. – {32 hdc}
Rnd 5: Ch 2, hdc in same st, hdc in next 3 sts, (2 hdc in next st, hdc in next 3 sts) 7 times, sl st into top of beginning ch 2. – {40 hdc}

Rnd 6: With Red, *skip 1, 5 hdc in next st, skip 1, sl st in next st; repeat from * around.
Rnd 7: Ch 2, 2 hdc in same st, *skip 2 hdc, sl st in next hdc, skip 2 hdc, 3 hdc in next sl st; repeat from * around, skip 2 hdc, sl st in next hdc, sl st in top of beginning ch 2.

Repeat Rnd 8: 0 (1, 2, 2) more times (or to desired hat height, half way down ears is recommended), move onto ear flaps.

Half-Double-Crochet-Two-TogetherPin

Row 1: Ch 2 (does not count as hdc for ear flaps,) hdc in each of next 8 (10, 12, 12) sts.
Row 2: Turn, ch 1, sc each of next 8 (10, 12, 12) sts, ch 2.
*size Baby move onto row 7
*size Toddler move onto row 5
Row 3: *sizes Child and Adult only* Turn, ch 2, hdc2tog, hdc in each of next 8 sts, hdc2tog.
Row 4: *sizes Child and Adult only* Turn, ch 1, sc each of next 10 sts.
Row 5: *sizes Toddler, Child and Adult only* Turn, ch 2, hdc2tog, hdc in each of next 6 sts, hdc2tog.
Row 6: *sizes Toddler, Child and Adult only* Turn, ch 1, sc each of next 8 sts.
Row 7: Turn, ch 2, hdc2tog, hdc in each of next 4 sts, hdc2tog.
Row 8: Turn, ch 1, sc each of next 6 sts.
Row 9: Turn, ch 2, hdc2tog, hdc in each of next 2 sts, hdc2tog.

Fasten off.

Starting next to the end of row 1 of ear flap, skip 16 (17, 18, 19) sts along bottom of hat body and attach yarn, make 2nd ear flap in same manner as first.

Fasten off, weave in all ends.

Finishing
With Red, join at end of row 9 of last ear flap, ch 1, sc in same st, sc in each st around entire hat (2 sc in sides of each hdc on sides of ear flaps), sl st into first sc, cut yarn and end off. Weave in ends.

Cut 60 pieces of yarn 40” long. Weave 30 pieces of yarn in bottom of red band above the ear flap on one side, pulling half way through so there are 2 tails hanging in front of the ear flap. Weave the ends of about half of these through the bottom of the ear flap as well. Repeat on other side with remaining 30 pieces of yarn.

Braid the ends of the yarn hanging from the ear flaps. Tie the bottom of the braids into a knot, and clip (or don’t.)

Make a large pom pom and attach it to the top. Try using a pom pom maker!
