Squares Headband

Here is a fun headband of little squares to keep you cool as the spring approaches. Make it of just one or two colors, or have fun with many colors, the possibilities are endless! It is a great companion to the dotted headband.

Yarn:
Worsted weight yarn. Sample was made with Vanna’s Choice.

Hook:
US H (5.0 mm)

Other Notions:
Yarn needle for weaving in ends

Stitches and Abbreviations used:
sl st ~ slip stitch
ch ~ chain
hdc ~ half double crochet
dc ~ double crochet
beg ~ beginning
sp ~ space
sk ~ skip
st(s) ~ stitch(es)

Squares ~ Make 5, joining as you go

Rnd 1: Make a magic circle (or ch3 and join into a circle with a sl st,) work into that: ch3 (counts as first hdc, ch1), (3hdc, ch1) 3 times, 2hdc, sl st to 2nd ch of beg ch3

Rnd 2: sl st into ch sp, ch3 (counts as first hdc, ch1), hdc in ch sp, *ch1, sk a st, hdc in next st, ch1, sk a st (hdc, ch1, hdc) in ch sp, rep from * 2 more times, ch1, sk a st, hdc in next st, ch1, sl st to 2nd ch of beg ch3, clip yarn, and weave in ends

Joining Squares

Make one square as per pattern. Work the second square until you get to the first (hdc, ch1, hdc) in ch sp in rnd 2, make the first hdc and then continue with round 2, but join the second square to the first square with the next 4 chs as follows:

After making hdc, slip hook into a ch sp corner of the square you are joining into, continue making ch, *make next hdc as normal, and join next ch into next ch sp of the square you are joining into, rep from * twice more, finish square as per pattern.

Join remaining squares in the same manner.

Boarder

There are 4 ch sps at the end of the row of squares, connect new color to the 3rd ch (see photo)

ch3, hdc in same sp, *(2sc, ch, 2sc) in corner ch sp, **2sc in each of next 2 ch sps, sc in each of next 2 ch sps (these are the 2 sps that joined the squares together), repeat from ** 3 more times, 2sc in each of next 2 ch sps, (2sc, ch, 2sc) in corner ch sp, (hdc, dc) in next ch sp, ch60, sl st into bottom loop of first ch, (dc, hdc) in next ch sp rep from * once more, stopping after ch60, sl st into bottom loop of first ch, then sl st to top of beg ch3, clip yarn, and weave in ends
