Learn to join the top of a row of single crochet to the top of another row of single crochet. This technique is a great way to join your crochet without gaps, so it works wonderfully for garments as well as blankets and other home decor. I have included a short video showing the basics of working the stitch, and a second video showing how to use it to join 4 squares into a larger square. This technique will actually work with nearly any stitch, not just single crochet.

For this tutorial I used Lion Brand Heartland Yarn.

Here is a video showing the basic join~as~you~go stitch:

Written instructions with photos:

To learn this stitch you are going to join 2 pieces that are 10 sc long and 3 rows tall.

First piece:

Row 1: Ch 11, sc in 2nd ch from hook and each remaining ch. (10 sc)

Row 2 & 3: Turn, ch 1 (does not count as a st), sc in each st across. (10 sc)

Second piece:

Work rows 1 & 2 the same as above

Row 3: (joining row) Turn, ch 1 (does not count as a st), * insert hook from front to back in the top loop of the sc that you are joining into on the first piece, sc into the next st on the second piece as follows: insert hook into st, yo, pull through st, yo, pull through all the loops on the hook, repeat from * across to end.

Here are pictures showing the join stitch step by step:

  2. I think this is a fabulous idea! I’ve crocheted for years and have yet to find a neat and tidy way of joining as you go, until now. I love your attitude: why worry? It’s art! LOVE IT!
