Ali Mobius Cowl ~ Chunky Weight
Crochet Pattern
Easy Skill Level
Designed by Jessie Rayot

With so many ways to wear the Ali Mobius Cowl, it will become a staple in your winter wardrobe in no time! This cowl is so easy, quick, and fun. If you can chain and double crochet, you can make Ali! Ali is simply a double crochet twisted tube made with 2 strands of chunky weight yarn held together. You can also find a pattern for this cowl made with 2 strands of worsted yarn, here. Make a matched set with the Eli hat or make a coordinating scarf for a friend with the Leo scarf.

Sizes:
Sizes are listed as the finished circumference. To decide which size you want, loop a measuring tape to the circumference size and see which one is the length you like. To make the cowl even longer, just add 7 more chs to the starting chain for every 4 inches.
Finished circumference 28 (32, 36, 40, 44, 48)

Yarn:
Chunky weight yarn in two solid colors, or one solid and one variegated, such as Loops and Thread Charisma. Amounts will vary depending on the measurements you choose. You can use the yarn info on each photo to estimate what you may need.

Supplies:
US 13/N/9.00 mm crochet hook
Yarn needle

Gauge:
Holding 2 strands of yarn together and working them as one: 7 stitches and 4 rows in dc make a 4” square.

Stitches and Skills used:
Ch ~ chain
dc ~ double crochet
sl st ~ slip stitc
St(s) ~ stitch(es)
Beg ~ beginning
Rep ~ repeat

Notes:
To make the cowl to any length you want, make the starting chain until your desired length, then add 3 more chains and continue with round 1. Once you have completed round 1, wrap it how you desire (such as around your shoulders, or over your head and around your neck) this will show you if you need to adjust the length of the first round by going back to the chains and adding or subtracting chains to lengthen or shorten the cowl.

Getting Started:
Hold 2 strands of yarn together and work as one for entire pattern.

Cowl:

Rnd 1: Ch 51 (58, 65, 72, 79, 86), loosely (if the chain is not loose, it will pull the cowl tighter in the middle) dc in 4th ch from hook (the last 3 ch count as the first dc), dc in each remaining st across, * fold the strip into a loop, placing ends next to each other and being careful not to twist.

Flip the end without the hook down (see picture), dc in the bottom of the ch 3, dc in the bottom of each remaining st around, sl st to the top of the beg ch 3. At the end of this rnd the piece will appear to be 2 rnds tall. (98 (112, 126, 140, 154, 168) dc).

*option, rather than making a chain and then working dc into the chains, you can make a row of 49 (56, 63, 70, 77, 84) foundation dc and then continue at the * in rnd 1.

Rnd 2: Do NOT turn, ch 3 (counts as first dc) dc in each remaining st around, sl st to the top of the beg ch 3, due to the twist, this round will wrap all the way around the top and bottom of the cowl. (98 (112, 126, 140, 154, 168) dc). At this point the cowl will appear to be 4 rows tall.

Rep rnd 2: until cowl is desired width. Use the yarn end at the beginning of the cowl to close the small hole in the middle from where the first round was joined. Fasten off and weave in ends.

  1. Hi! Love this pattern? I have a question…at the end of round 2(1?) do you slip stitch into the top of the ch 3 on each go around? Thanks!

        • Thank you so much for checking! My testers and I all missed that, I’m so glad you caught it. I fixed it in both versions of the pattern.
I love putting littles things like that twist in my patterns to make them easier to create and/or give them some originality.

          • I was wondering if there was a way to sew them together but to have it look natural. I have tried several different ways and you can see where it was sewn together. Thanks!

  2. I love this pattern! I made it with a double strand of super chunky and it ended up a little more stiff than I would have liked. However, my 15 year old granddaughter tried it on and fell in love with it. I gave it to her and she wears it everyday! I used black yarn with silver metallic threads in it and it has just the right amount of sparkle to it. She said all the girls at school loved it too! Nothing like a pattern to impress a bunch of fashionable 15 year olds! Thank you so much for sharing this with the world!

  4. Hello I love this pattern! Yours looks like the perfect size for me, what is the measured width on this? Thanks so much for sharing this pattern.

    • Honestly, I don’t have any of them anymore to measure. You just keep going until it is the width you like though.
