The alternate stitch is a very simple stitch that provides texture and visual appeal to your projects. If you can make a single crochet, you can make the alternate stitch. In this post you will find a video to teach the stitch, written instructions, and a written and charted pattern for a practice piece.
For this tutorial I used Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice yarn and a US I/9/5.5mm crochet hook.
This video will teach you the alternate stitch
Here are the written instructions for this stitch.

You can not copy or pin the chart. Just the chart. There is no easy way for me to make just the chart unpinnable. The top image of the post is made in a Pinterest friendly size, I recommend pinning that one.
Thank you for helping me. I don’t really understand because I don’t know how to make a single crochet. I will continue to try to learn from you.
Thanks for helping me. I’m 75 yrs. old, and sometimes don’t catch on easily.

I see. If you look at the menu bar at the top of the site, there is a link for “learn to crochet” you will find some helpful info there, including how to make a single crochet.
Hi Jessie,
Thank you for your website, it is super helpful!!
For the Alternate stitch– I’m just learning, and I think I’ve been doing the Alternate stitch but with 1dc and 1sc in the same stitch, skip 1 stitch and repeat.
Would you know what the name of that stitch would be? Thank you for any help! (My dishcloths, done in this stitch, thank you as well )
I’m not sure of the name. Sometimes the hardest part of stitch tutorials is finding the most common name for the stitch! Some of them have a lot of names, and some don’t seem to have a name at all.
