Centered Double Crochet (CDC): Crochet Stitch Tutorial

This post may contain affiliate links, which means I may receive a commission if you make a purchase using these links. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The centered double crochet, or in line double crochet is a variation of the double crochet. The placement of the stitch is changed slightly so that the stitches are all lined up on top of each other. With the regular double crochet the stitches are set a tiny bit to the side of each other, and this technique fixes that. If you are replacing a regular dc with a centered dc, please be aware that the centered dc is slightly shorter than the regular dc, so you may need to take that into account for the sizing of your finished item. This Stitchopedia post includes a video, and written instructions with process photos.

In this tutorial, I used Red Heart Super Saver yarn and a US 9/I/5.5mm hook.

This video will show you how to make the centered or in line double crochet, as well as tell you a bit more about it and its uses.

Written instructions with photos:

Abbreviations:
dc ~ double crochet
yo ~ yarn over
st(s) ~ stitch(es)

The centered dc is made the same as a regular dc, except the placement of the st is changed. With a regular dc the stitch is worked into the top loops of the st below. With the centered dc, the stitch is worked into the same top two loops, plus the loop just below that. Here is a photo to show what that looks like from both sides of the st.

Making the stitch:
Yo, insert hook beneath the top 2 loops and the loop just below them of the next st, yo, pull loop through the st (3 loops left on hook), yo, pull through 2 loops (2 loops left on hook), yo, pull through 2 loops.

Ready to create more? Here are some patterns that have a filet border where I used a centered dc:
