I have had so many requests for a crochet version of the Dragon Wing Cowl, that I just had to oblige! So here it is: the Dragon Wing Scarf. It is a bit longer and more flowy than the knit counterpart, and I really like it! There are notes on how to make it shorter if you want to button it as a cowl, but I really like the scarf. The Crystal Palace Panda Pearl yarn is perfect for this fashionable accessory. It’s so very soft and luscious!

sp(s) ~ space(s)
st(s) ~ stitch(es)

Notes:
Gauge swatch
Row 1: Ch 32, turn, (sc, ch 2, sc) in second ch from hook, * skip 2, (sc, ch 2, sc) in next ch, repeat from * to end.
Rows 2~ 20: Turn, do not chain, (sc, ch 2, sc) in each ch-2 sp across.
Measure within swatch to check gauge. This is not a fitted item, so it is not critical to get exact gauge, but any variations will change the finished measurements.
If you chain very loosely, you may want to switch the ch-7s in the pattern to ch 6s.

Check your size before starting row 59. If the straight portion is not long enough, then continue the repeats unit it is – this will cause you to need more yarn.

If you would like to make a cowl with buttons, such as the knit version, then skip rows 31~58.

HERE is a video tutorial to help you get started.

Loop the ladder: Pick up the first ch-7 from the foundation ch, *pull the ch-7 from the row above through the loop, creating a new loop (do not twist), repeat from * until all the ch-7s have been pulled through. Repeat with each set of ch-7s. Here is a Jacob’s Ladder tutorial if you need some help with that.

Row 95: Turn, ch 1, hdc in hdc, ch 1, (sc, ch 2, sc) in each of next 10 ch-2 sps, [ch 1, (sc, ch 2, sc) in each of next 11 ch-2 sps] 2 times, ch 1, (sc, ch 2, sc) in each of next 10 ch-2 sps, ch 1, hdc in last hdc.

Row 96: Turn, ch 1, hdc in hdc, sc in ch-7 loop, (sc, ch 2, sc) in each of next 10 ch-2 sps, [sc in ch-7 loop, (sc, ch 2, sc) in each of next 11 ch-2 sps] 2 times, sc in ch-7 loop, (sc, ch 2, sc) in each of next 10 ch-2 sps, sc in ch-7 loop, hdc in last hdc. End off.

Border on row 1: At the base of row 1, fold the corner with the starting tail so that the first looped section is at the edge (fold the first hdc under so it lines up with the first sc). Using the starting tail, pull a loop through both sts to the front, ch 1, sc in same spot, place 2 more sc before next loop, [sc at base of next loop, 3 sc between loops] 3 times, the last sc should go through the last sc of row 1 AND the last hdc of row 1, holding the side folded at the last looped section in the same manner as the first. End off.

Weave in all ends. Block scarf.

Wear or give and enjoy!

  1. This is so gorgeous, this is so pretty!! You are SO clever !! I was going to make the dragon cowl and now I don’t know which one to make first *looks around in bemusement*. (Maybe I’ll make ’em both at the same time.)

    • Well, it looks like I have a counting problem! 😉 The pattern was correct, I just numbered 2 rows as 70. I fixed them. Thank you so much for pointing that out!

  2. Can you post pictures of how to begin or more step by step. I think I am following the pattern correctly, but it looks different than your finished pictures. Thanks so much.

  3. In row 1, I don’t understand what “chain 7, skip chain 7 loop” means because immediately following this it has [skip 1, (sc, ch 2, sc) in next ch].

Can you please help me to understand this? I hope I’m not bothering you with this, it’s probably something simple I just can’t wrap my mind around.

    Thank you,
    Shelly

    • You ch 7, then you skip the ch 7 loop, then you skip 1 more ch, then you (sc, ch 2, sc) in the next ch.

I have linked my Facebook group in all my patterns. That is the best place to ask questions, as there are more people there to help, and you can post photos as well.

  4. Love this scarf and plan to make it for a young woman friend for Christmas. I am thinking about adding beads to the spines of the wings. Do you have any suggestions for where these could be added in the pattern? I am having a hard time visualizing how the pattern will work up. I will start graphing it out, any suggestions you have are appreciated.

    thank you, julie

    • That sounds really cool!! The center of the loops actually end up on the inside of the scarf, so that leaves 2 options: you could place the beads on ch 1 and 7 or 2 and 6 of the ch-7 spaces, or, you could use beads with really large holes and pull the loops through the beads while looping them together.

i guess you could also place the beads on ch 4 of the ch-7 space and wear it “inside out”. Maybe take a look at the Jacob’s ladder tutorial linked in the video to get a better idea of how it comes together, and possibly make a little sample square to try it out?

  5. Thank you for your bead suggestions. i am going to try using beads with larger holes (2/0) and try pulling the loop through the bead when doing the jacobs ladder. will decide how often to place the beads when i get that far in the pattern.

so i have started the pattern. in row 1, it says to ch 12 , 4 times and then there is *ch7, repeat from * 4 times. i couldnt figure that out, so i just repeated the *ch 7, 3 times. that seems to fit with the next row best. does anyone have a thought on that?

also, is there somewhere where there is a clear picture of the beginning of the scarf? mine is wanting to curve and i would like to know if it is supposed to be straight across.

and i am probably just missing it, but would you tell me where the video tutorial is that you are referring to and what it is called?

    thank you, julie

    • The best way for you to get help with the patterns is to join the Facebook group linked in the patterns. That way there are many people who can help you. I am very hit or miss right now due to some family situations.

All the photos and info for the pattern are in this post.

For the part that says “Repeat from *” you go back to where the * is and repeat from there.

The video tutorial for the Jacobs ladder is linked at the end of the pattern.

  6. Currently working on scarf. Loving the look.

    One minor pattern correction:

    Row 67
At the second to last ch7
    You have written:
(SC, CH 2, SC) in each of the next 3 ch-2 sps

In the previous row = Row 66 that second to last CH 7 grouping has a ch-2, ch-1, ch-2 sequence.

I understand what you are saying but still it threw me off a second

  7. OK, I finished my dragon wing scarf. I go to try it on my daughter and it’s too short. Urggggg

So I check the pattern to see if I missed a page, nope. I did a gauge swatch before I started and my stitches matched yours. Yout gauge is 16 rows is 4 inches, so if my math is right, that’s 4 rows per inch. Your pattern says finished length should be 36 inches and mine is 26 inches so I’m missing 10 inches/40 rows. So I recheck the math on your rows. Correct me if I’m wrong, the pattern has 96 rows total. My math says 96 divide by 4 rows per inch = 24 inches. Wjat am I missing?

  8. Not sure how this pattern is to work out to anything like what you’ve made…I worked rows 1 and 2 and ended up with a ball of crochet, and a tail with loops on it. I followed the pattern exactly how you wrote it =/ . I don’t see a link to a video either. Help?

    Reply
    • it is a string of crochet with loops when you start. There will be a video in a couple weeks, but if you follow the pattern, it does work. If you watch the video that is linked for Jacob’s ladder, it should help as well.

  9. I looked through the pattern instructions a few times and I cannot tell how many skeins of yarn I need. Is it just one? Or more?

  10. Hi Jessie,
Thank you for your pattern, this is scarf is so pretty! Even if I can’t estimate myself an expert in crocheting, I tried to make it.
Following the instructions, everything worked fine, and I almost finished my dragon wing scarf. Your video tutorial for the beginning of the scarf or the Jacob’s ladder are very useful too, they helped me a lot.
But I really have some difficulties with the last line of the crochet pattern, where “Border on row 1”; maybe because English is not my mother language, so there must be some hints I didn’t understand….
Can you post some pictures, or another video, of how to finish the crochet scarf, (I’m not on Facebook) please?

    • I don’t have a video for that section, just take it one stitch at a time. Without knowing what part has you confused, I can’t really help.

      • Thanks for your answer, I’ll try to explain precisely. So I copy and paste the lines that confused me, the last part of the scarf:
“At the base of row 1, fold the corner with the starting tail so that the first looped section is at the edge (fold the first hdc under so it lines up with the first sc). Using the starting tail, pull a loop through both sts to the front, ch 1, sc in same spot, place 2 more sc before next loop, [sc at base of next loop, 3 sc between loops] 3 times, the last sc should go through the last sc of row 1 AND the last hdc of row 1, holding the side folded at the last looped section in the same manner as the first.”
I hope we’ll be able to solve the problem…

        • Just sc across the base of row 1 if you can’t understand the instructions. You are folding under the edges so the braided part is at the edge, I don’t know a better way to explain it.

  11. Oh my gosh – I was dubious. I loved the look of the scarf on the website but what I was making was a stringy looking mess. Patience and perseverance though got me through. I now have the most beautiful dragon scarf. I used Lion Brand’s “Shawl in a Ball in a purple/pink/teal colour and it’s stunning! I can’t wait to gift it! Thank you!!

  12. Hi, Thanks so much for the pattern. I’m almost done with the scarf but ran into one small problem with the last two rows. Should the ch1 go over or under the ch7 loops? The first time around I did over and the loops in the last row became kinda undone so the ribs disappeared in this part. I decided to undo it and try again but ended up with the same result… what am I doing wrong?

    • In row 95 you don’t work in the loops, just leave the loops on the front of the scarf. In row 96 you work into the top of the loops. You need to be sure you have turned the ladders into loops for this to work. The directions for that are before row 95 and there is a video linked there as well.

      • thank you!
One other question… Not a huge deal because the scarf isn’t a fitted garment, but what does “8.5 spider stitches by 16 rows” mean for the swatch? I’m used to measurement for swatches, and you don’t use the term “spider stich” anywhere else.

  13. I’d like to make a version with buttons like the knitted one, and I see that you say to skip rows 31 to 58 to do that… so that would essentially make it shorter? I’d essentially start the increases at row 31?
And then are there instructions for adding the buttons?
Thanks, I’m looking forward to this.
