Thought I would share a few firsts with you.

I took a few snaps of the first day of school, but I took them on my phone, and keep having issues posting them. The phone finally decided to play nice, so here they are.

walking-to-schoolPin

Here we go. Off to school.

This is a corner on the way to school. Sorry about the quality. Phone camera.

Vada wondering if we can go yet.

Kyla-first-day-of-schoolPin

Here we are in front of the school. Vada refused to stop. She is running up to the school. You can kind of see a bit of her over Kyla’s left shoulder, but she is mostly blocked by Kyla.

While we are on firsts, how about I share the first floor renos that we have done so far?

Key-and-stuff-dropPin

Here is our “works for now” drop zone. High shelf for Doug, pegs for keys and little things, and lower shelf for me.

shoe-storagePin

Just on the other side of the window I put this bookshelf we weren’t using, for shoe storage. I bought the girls and I rain boots. Aren’t they cute?

Here is the whole set up. To your left is the front door into the porch, and to your right is the door into the house. It isn’t the drop zone I want to keep, but it’s made of stuff we already had, and it certainly works very well for now.

finally-flipped-Doug's-doorPin

I finally got around to flipping the door on Doug’s office. It used to open into the office, which just killed a lot of his space, so I flipped it and now it opens into the hallway. Much better.

Doug's-recycled-deskPin

I also made Doug a new desk. He told me exactly what he wanted. Basically, just as deep as the radiator cover, a few inches taller then the radiator cover, a shelf in the middle, and a little step up on to so the cable box fits under the TV.

I cut little notches for the wires to feed down to the outlet.

Doug's-desk-topPin

The whole desk is made out of the random shelves that were hung with shelf braces all over the house when we moved in. Most of them were deep enough, but not long enough for the desk top. There were only 2 that were long enough for the top, but they were only 7 1/2″ deep. So I ripped straight edges on them and glued them together. If you look really closely at the above picture, you can see the line. It’s not centered, it’s a bit closer to the bottom of the picture.

loading-up-the-deskPin

Here is Doug’s $3.00 desk, in use. It cost $3.00, because when we were at the ReStore, I had him pick out a pint of paint, as all the shelves were painted various shades of off white.

kitchen-holePin

Here we have the open hole where the previous owners took out a dishwasher in the 80’s. Yes, they really left that open for nearly 3 decades. Rather lazy, that pair.

getting-ready-to-install-the-dishwasherPin

My new toy, all ready to be installed.

my-new-dishwasher!Pin

Here it all, all pretty and working. It is the panel~ready model, so when we redo the kitchen we can remove the front panel and put on a new one to match the new kitchen.

pantry-to-bePin

I think I showed you the pantry before. Well, here it is with all the old stuff taken out. The wall continues a ways to the left of the radiator, the washer and dryer are against the wall over there. My dad gave me an early Christmas present, he bought all the lumber to make a new pantry for me, and designed it to what I wanted, and made it for me, with some help from me, and even some from Mom and Doug.

adding-the-shelvesPin

After we put up the braces, and the first two shelves.

Everything in. I have always wanted a walk in U~shaped pantry.

Pantry-right-sidePin

A view to the right.

pantry-left-sidePin

A view to the left. You can see we added a half wall above the radiator. Otherwise I’d be pushing everything off the back of my shelves. Really. I would.

The back of the half wall. Now the pantry and the laundry “room” are separate.

laundry-orginizationPin

I covered the half wall with some fabric, hung a towel bar for drying small dedicates, and tossed up this fun sock keeper that was inspired by pintrest.

laundry-cubby-all-fixed-upPin

Dad also surprised me with these two cabinets. The one above the washer is up to the ceiling, so I can still open the machine, but we were able to drop the one above the dryer, so I can reach more of the shelves. It works wonderfully. I keep the cleaner concentrates and extras on the top shelf above the washer, so it’s not a big deal that I need Doug or a step ladder to reach that one.

I am very happy with my new laundry “room”.

new-dining-room-fanPin

Unfortunately, I don’t think I every showed you the ceiling fan in the dining room. I really liked it. Murphy’s law took over, and it went kaput. So Dad replaced it with this one. I like this one a lot, too.

filled-up-pantryPin

Here is my pantry, all filled up. I love it so much. It is my favorite Christmas present this year. How do I know? Well, I can’t imagine anything better without someone winning the lotto, so I feel safe saying it is my favorite. The really cool thing…Dad finished it on July 25th. Nifty.

I’ll post the second floor renos in the next week.

Good night.
