Four Points Square – Free Crochet Pattern

This post may contain affiliate links, which means I may receive a commission if you make a purchase using these links. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

This easy afghan square is great for beginners! It uses just 3 stitches: chain, single crochet and double crochet, to create a four point star inside the square. The Four Points Square can be used with other squares to make a sampler blanket, or it can be used on its own to make a throw with a classic look. Using the suggested yarn and gauge will create a 12″ square, but you can certainly change the yarn and gauge to make this square in a variety of sizes.

  2. I would love to start this 4 point square.

I was wondering if there is a video from start to finish how to make this wonderful square.

Love the designs you have made so far.

I am still learning HOW TO.. Crochet, Really new at this craft still.
I have found videos really help me understand and complete something to gain more confident.

    • Sorry, I have not made a video for this pattern. I do have videos for the various stitches which are linked in the stitches used list, and there is a chart as well.

    • This is just a pattern for a square. I am planning on using it in a baby blanket pattern and I will have yarn amounts listed for that, but for just a square pattern I usually do not list yarn amounts. When I make the blanket pattern I will try to remember to add the amount used for one square to this pattern.

  3. I am a novice and even though it’s been quite a while since I read a pattern, I found this pattern very confusing to follow. What does * mean and when something is in ( ) is that a repeat or a reminder .

    Reply
    • The * is there to mark the beginning of a section that will later be repeated. The ( ) is there to hold instructions that are all worked into the same st.

  4. I love this pattern, but am having issues.
Why in row 4, am I only getting 13 stitches?
Row 3 has the 11 DC across each side.

      • I am having the same issue, I have tried it several times with the same result. Is the corner the right stitch count

        • It should be fine, not sure what you’re doing wrong, try posting in the facebook group I linked in the pattern with some description of what isn’t working for you.

  5. The instructions for row 4 appear to be correct – at least according to the actual square pictured. There are 13 dc’s along each side in row 4. The issue some are having is that the instructions say there should be 15 dc’s along each side. This is the error and what is confusing. This would be correct if we were still putting 2, 2 dc’s sets in each corner as we had done on previous rows, but we are not. On this row 4, we are only putting 2, 1 dc sets. So, the dc stitch count of 13 along each side for row 4 is the correct count. Hope this helps clear things up.

    • There are 13 dc on each side, AND 2 chains on each side (Not counting the corner). So there are 15 sts on each side and a ch-2 for each corner.

  6. There is an error in Round 10. You begin with a chain stitch of 5, which represents the first dc and ch-2. So you don’t need to dc in the ch-2 space at the end of that round or you’ll end up with one too many dc. I made several squares and kept ending up with a weird number of dc’s until I realized what the problem was.

    • Oh my goodness you’re right! I can’t believe no one’s pointed that out before. I fixed it. Thank you so much!

  7. After row 4 nothing seems to make sense. I am an intermediate crocheter and cannot get to grips with this pattern at all. I have had several attempts and always end up frustrated .

    • It has been made many times, so I’m confident the pattern is correct.

Sl st in ch-2 sp, ch 5, 2 dc in ch-2 sp, * ch 1, dc in ch-1 sp, ch 1, skip 1 dc, dc in each of next 9 dc, ch 1, dc in ch-1 sp, ch 1, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch-2 corner sp, repeat from * 2 more times, ch 1, dc in ch-1 sp, ch 1, skip 1 dc, dc in each of next 9 dc, ch 1, dc in ch-1 sp, ch 1, dc in ch-2 sp, sl st to 3rd ch of starting ch 5 to join round. ~ 19 sts on each side, ch 2 over each corner

So you sl st in the ch-2 sp, then you ch 5 (which counts as the first dc and a ch 2), then you make 2 dc in that same ch-2 sp. *Next you ch 1, then dc in the ch-1 sp, then ch 1 and skip the next dc, then you make a dc in each of the next 9 dc, then ch 1, then dc in the ch-1 sp, then you make (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) all in the ch-2 corner. You repeat from the * 2 more times, then ch 1, then dc in the ch-1 sp, then ch 1 and skip the next dc, then you make a dc in each of the next 9 dc, then ch 1, then dc in the ch-1 sp, then ch 1, then dc in the same ch-2 sp you started in, then sl st to the 3rd ch of the starting ch-5.

  8. I only started crocheting about 6 years ago and I used this pattern for my first two blankets. It sure is quick to finish! It took me about three months for each blanket. My most recent blanket in another pattern took 10 months. This one is so beautiful!

    • I’m so happy to hear that! The blanket in this photo went to my niece-by-choice just a few weeks after my friends, her foster (at the time) parents, brought her home from the hospital when she was 2 weeks old. 3 years later they were finally able to adopt her. She’s starting kindergarten next year and is so sweat and perfect and loved! I like to think the blanket brought her some luck and lots of love.
