Hello my yarnie friends. I have some fun for you this month! I have a lot on my plate right now, but I wanted to have a Crochet Along and Knit Along. So, I had a chat with my friend Melody of Melody’s Makings who designs wonderful patterns in both knit and crochet.

Jessie At Home - Melody's Mini CAL-KALPin
She was quite happy to allow use to use one of her patterns for a month long mini CAL/KAL. I took a look through her free patterns with both a knit and crochet version and decided upon this one: (click the box below to go to the pattern)

Isn’t it fun? And it comes in pretty much All. The. Sizes. So, you can make a new hat for whoever you want! All you need to do is click on the link for the pattern above and you will go to Melody’s pattern listing on her site. From there you will be able to find the PDF downloads of the knit version and the crochet version.

For the first week of this CAL/KAL we are starting slow so everyone has time to join in. This week we are choosing yarn and making a gauge swatch. Making a gauge swatch is very important. These patterns list the guage for a 2″ square. I made mine 4″ long and 2″ tall to be sure I got the stitch count just right. With a hat, the stitches across the rounds are more important to be in gauge then the row count. Most of the time if you are on gauge for one, you are on gauge for the other, but sometimes there is a small variance. My crochet stitches seem to be a bit taller than Melody’s, so I made sure the stitch count was true to her gauge. You can find the info on the weight yarn and amounts needed in the pattern. Be sure to have enough yarn, better too much than not enough!!

Here’s my details:

Crochet

Melodys-Mini-CAL-Week-1-Jessie-At-HomePin

Yarn: Knit Picks Wool of the Andes Tweed, 2 skeins color Claret Heather #25466, 110 yd/50 g each
Hook: US 8/H/5.00 mm
Size to be made: 3-10 years
Notes: I had to go down in size to get gauge. I guess I crochet looser than Melody. Good thing I checked, or my hat would be too big!!

Knit

Melodys-Mini-KAL-Week-1-Jessie-At-HomePin

Yarn: Knit Picks Wool of the Andes Tweed, 1 skein color North Pole Heather #25964, 110 yd/50 g;
Knit Picks Wool of the Andes, 1 skein color Tranquil #25981, 110 yd/50 g
Needle: US 8/5.00 mm
Size to be made: 3-10 years
Notes: I think I’m going to make the hat with every other row changing colors. I may make the ribbing out of just the Heather, and then start alternating colors after the ribbing…maybe.

Now, pop on over to Facebook and join my CAL/KAL group so you can share your yarn and swatches and let everyone know who your hat will be for!

I will post the links for each week as they happen here:

Week 1, January 4, 2016

Week 3, January 18, 2016

Week 4, January 25, 2016

I want to say a BIG thank you to Melody for playing with us for this CAL/KAL and for being so generous to allow me to use some of her images that she works so hard to take/create and edit. Melody is hosting a mini create along of her own! You can find the details of her create along here:

    • Oops, I put the knit photo with the crochet info and the crochet photo with the knit info. I just inserted the images backwards. I fixed them, so it’s all good now. 🙂
