Moonstruck Cowl by Jessie At Home ~ Free Knit PatternPin

Moonstruck Cowl

Designed by Jessie Rayot

I bought some beautiful yarn at Rhinebeck Sheep & Wool festival this year, and one of those yarns inspired this pattern. When you have beautiful yarn, you don’t need a lot going on in your pattern. This linen stitch cowl has a small amount of shaping around the bottom half to form to your shoulders and keep you nice and warm!

Size:
One size ~ though if you change the cast on amount you can change the neck opening size (23 inches as written).

Yarn:
Blue Moon Twisted! In Waltzing Loelia: 100: Merino Wool, 82 g/3 oz used (less than half of an 8 oz skein)

Needles:
US 8/5.00 mm

Gauge:
22 sts in linen st in 4″

Stitches and Skills used:
CO ~ cast on
K ~ knit
M1L ~ make 1 left (explained)
M1R ~ make 1 right (explained)

Special stitches:
M1L ~ make 1 left: Insert left needle from front to back under the strand of yarn which runs between the stitch just worked and the next stitch on the left needle, knit this stitch through the back loop.
M1R ~ make 1 right: Insert left needle, from back to front, under the strand of yarn which runs between the stitch just worked and the next stitch on the left needle, knit this stitch through the front loop.

Find a tutorial with videos showing both the M1L and M1R here.
Find a written and video tutorial on the linen stitch here.

Getting Started:
To change the neck opening size, add or subtract cast on stitches by a multiple of 14. When working round 34, you will then add or subtract that many repeats to the numbers in bold. So if you subtract 14 sts, then you will repeat the first section 8 times (not 9), the next 20 times (not 21) and the last  8 times (not 9).
~or~ Make the cast on amount any odd number you want (be sure it will fit over your head) and repeat rounds 4~6 until you have 165 sts, then move onto round 34 and continue the pattern as it is written. This will make the top portion shorter if you added sts to the cast on, and longer if you subtracted sts from the cast on.

  1. Dear Jessie:
I left you a message some months ago asking if you could make the crochet version for the moonstruck cowl. Since you never .answered me I guess that was a NO, or maybe your’e just too busy. But I do understand, it’s just that I like it so much but cannot knit. Anyway, keep up the good work.

I am one person and I receive a lot of messages. I do my best to reply to all of them, but sometimes I miss one, I’m only human. I may make a crochet version of this at some point, but I’m not sure. I wish I could make every pattern everyone asks for, but again, I am just one person.
