Off to Sausalito is a striking unisex hat that works wonderfully with Camillo’s Scarf. Made with Crystal Palace Sausalito yarn and worked in continuous rounds, it features spiraling stripes in a simple single crochet v~stitch. The hat is actually rather easy to make, though I listed it as intermediate because it can be tricky to find the ch-1 to work into sometimes, and because of the continuous rounds. However, if you just take your time and go carefully, it becomes easy after a few rounds.

The yarn I used for Camillo’s scarf is not easy to get ahold of ~ I bought it in a yarn shop in Sicily. So I wanted to show you something in the same stitch with an easy to obtain yarn that can be used for the scarf as well.

Getting Started:
This pattern is worked in continuous rounds, so there are no seams. A removable stitch marker is used to mark the end of each round.
This hat NEEDS to be blocked. The top will be very bumpy and look odd until it is blocked. A quick and easy way to do this if you do not have blocking supplies is to soak the hat in lukewarm water, roll it in a hand towel and squeeze (do not wring), and then stretch it over something head size ~ such as a large ball of yarn with a dry towel over it, or a styrofoam ball that is the proper diameter with a dry towel over it. Then let it dry.
For the st count at the end of the row, each scv counts as 1 st.
The sample is made in the Woman size, the full ball of yarn was used.

ch 4, sl st in first ch to form a loop
Round 1: 6 Scv in loop, place marker. ~ {6 sts}

  1. I used to crochet a long time ago and your pattern seems like it would easy, however I am much older now and don’t understand directions like I used to. I am havin a problem getting started with ,,the first roll. I am now a beginner, just an old woman that needs to be shown about the v stitch. I am a retired juvenile worker, security guard, secretary at a juvenile facility for 34 years and a part time photojournalist for over 20 years. The only connection with crocheting is one of my girls on the cottage I worked was the only one who could teach me. Being a visual person, I worked easier with someone that had the patience to teach me. I am sure I can do it, just need some help getting started. Can you help me? If not, it is not a big thing. I have six grandchildren from my son and daughter.

    • I would recommend joining my facebook group linked at the bottom of the pattern. Then you can ask questions in there and there are people who will help out. I am spending the holiday weekend with my family, so I don’t have the time to walk you through it now, but if you ask in the group someone may be around to help. I will be back to working my regular hours next week, and I help people in the group as well.

  2. Trying to join your Facebook group but getting no response for my request. How often do you check your group page? I have questions about the pattern instructions.

      • It took me a minute how the pattern works but I figured it out. I’m actually doing this in a soft black yarn so I’m having to use stitch markers all the way around then move them up to the next vstitch and ch1 space. It’s time consuming I know but I can’t wait to see it finished.
