Our trip to New England (a little late)

I had a lot of photos to share in this post, maybe a bit too many, so I turned most of them into collages. As always, you can click on a photo to see it a bit larger.

At the beginning of the month we went to visit my family in New England. My mother is the oldest of 11 kids, and all 11 of them managed to make it back to Beverly, MA for our little reunion. OK, maybe not so little. There was my grandparents, their 11 kids, most of their spouses/significant others, many of their kids, along with some spouses/significant others, and a few more kids of theirs. For those of you keeping count, that is 4 generations.

We drove from our home in NJ up to my Aunt Diane’s house in New Hampshire. I really love her house. She was having a get together there, and as the evening wore on, lots of family showed up.

There was a patch of sand in the back where an above ground pool had been for a while. The girls had fun making sand cakes and other goodies with some of my little cousins. OK, remember how I said my mother was the oldest of 11? Well that means that the children of some of her younger siblings are closer in age to my kids then to me. Actually, her youngest brother is 7 months younger then me.

The girls always love to spend time with cousin Carly. She’s just plain fun. I happen to agree.

Di has a couple ATVs, and my Godson took his girlfriend for a ride.

Di has a great little play set in the back. There is always something interesting happening on it.

Of course no trip to Di’s is complete without a big pallet bon fire! My cousin Tiffany’s boyfriend sharpened a stick for Vada. She was quite happy. She was not happy that I took it away right after the picture. It was a bit too sharp and a bit too dark. I’m a pretty easy going mom, but you’ve got to draw the line somewhere 🙂

The next afternoon we stopped on over at my (great) Aunt Carmella and Uncle Red’s house for lunch with my parents. My Aunt Carmella is my grandmother’s sister. They have/had 7 other sibblings.

We had lobster for lunch. As you can see, Kyla loved it!

The John Cina Champion belt in the photo is authentic. His grandmother lived across the street from Aunt Carmella and Uncle Red. She passed away a while ago, but he still remembers Aunt Carmella from growing up. Aunt Carmella and Uncle Red’s grandson is a big wrestling fan, and John gave him the autographed belt and photo.

See the bottom photos with the dog? Aunt Carmella and Uncle Red were dog sitting for their daughter~in~law.  The dog was rather taken with Vada.

We did have more plans for later in the evening, but we were able to stop back at my cousin Christine’s house ~ where we were crashing ~ for a little unwind time. Vada was beat.

While we were out Christine had gone school shopping for her kids. She bought herself a few items as well. I know I have said it before, but I have to say it again: the 80’s are back. Totally.

So that evening we went over to my Uncle Johnny’s house for a get together. Vada and her cousin Tucker had become best friends by this point. Vada loves playing with older kids, and Tucker loves having a fan, so it worked out very well for them!

The next day my parents and grandparents stopped at super sub and brought lunch over to Christine’s. We hung out outside and had a great time. The girls played many games of Old Maid with my parents. They loved it when Grandpa was the Old Maid.

They also played hide and seek with Grandpa. He had some great hiding places, but I think he got a bit lazy in the end. OK, you see the photo on the left. Just before the photo was snapped, that table on the ground was leaning against the other one. He has Vada back ther as well ~ or maybe it was Kyla.

After lunch we were inside for a bit, and Kyla sang us a song about her favorite T~Rex (T, from Field Station Dinosaurs), followed by a question and answer session.

That evening my mother and her 10 siblings, and their spouses and significant others, took my grandparents out for dinner. So my generation, and spouses and significant others and kids, all congregated at my Aunt Nancy’s house. She’s a brave one.

We ordered Nick’s Roast Beef for dinner. It was so surreal to be hanging out with all my cousins, as adults. Aside from my brother (who wasn’t there) I am the oldest of the grandkids. My cousin Tiffany is 11 days younger then me, and then there is 7 years before the next. So, I remember each of my cousins being born. Every one of them has a special place in my heart. And here we were, hanging out in the way I remember my mom and her generation hanging out when I was a child.

It was wonderful.

You want to know just how cool we are? We named ourselves “the Sciola’s: TNG.” Sciola is my mother’s maiden name. TNG, well, that would be a geek thing. It’s how Trekies refer to The Next Generation.

Vada took the chance to spend some time with Cali gang.

The girls spent some time hanging out with some of the guys in the garage. Vada and Tom (Christine’s husband) had some quality time together. Tom taught Vada how to play darts.

I love my crazy family.

Our last morning there we all met for breakfast at the common room of my Grandparents retirement community. My Uncle Gary brought this beautiful old bible that he found at an estate sale.

It was nice being able to get to see everyone one last time before we left.
