Here you will learn how to make left leaning and right leaning post stitch crochet cables, over 2 sts or over 4 sts. I have written the instructions, included lots of process photos, and a video. I have also written and charted a sample piece for you to try out your new skill. Once you know these basics for cables, you will be able to tackle most post stitch cable pattern!

For the samples seen in this post, I have used Universal Cotton Supreme yarn, and a US H/8/5.00 mm crochet hook.
This video will show you the 4 cables (left and right leaning over 2 and 4 sts).

Here are written instructions for each cable, followed by process photos for each.

Abbreviations:
ch ~ chain
hdc ~ half double crochet
dc ~ double crochet
fpdc ~ front post double crochet
bpdc ~ back post double crochet
fptr ~ front post treble crochet
st(s) ~ stitch(es)

Left leaning cable across 2 sts: (LC2) Skip 1, fpdc in next st, fpdc in skipped st working in front of previous st.

1) Ready to start a cable over these 2 stitches.
2) Skip one stitch and front post double crochet in the next stitch (stitch number 2).
3) Here is the completed fpdc in the second stitch.
4) Next you are going to work into the skipped stitch (stitch number 1)

1) Working in front of everything else, fpdc in the skipped stitch (stitch number 1)
2) Finished left leaning cable over 2 stitches.
3) Left leaning cable over 2 stitches with bpdc on either side.

3) Completed right leaning 2 stitch cable with bpdc on both sides.

Left leaning cable across 4 sts: (LC4) Skip 2, fptc in each of next 2 sts, fptc in both skipped sts working in front of previous 2 sts. It may help to think of the stitches numbered right to left as 1, 2, 3, and 4. Fptc in those stitches in this order: 3, 4, 1, 2.

2) Skip 2 stitches, fptr in the next stitch (stitch number 3)
3) Fptr in 3rd stitch completed.

  1. Thank you sooooo much for these instructions and video. I couldn’t figure out the right-leaning post stitches, but with your video, I was able to see exactly where I was going wrong. I really appreciate you taking the time and resources to do this.

  2. Hello Jessie,
I’m at the Stitchopedia part for how to do the Post Stitch Cables and wanted to print it to take with me, but it says not to copy them in any way. What can I do to not have to sit at the computer and crochet your beautiful “Hoodie Cowl”?
    Thank you! Moe

    • You can print it out for your own use, just please don’t share it. I make my money when people are on my site (from the ads), so if you print it out and give it to others, I loose money. But I realize that sometimes you need to print it out for yourself, and that’s just fine. 🙂

  3. I am attempting to design a sweater using crochet cables – many different types. The problem is the stitch markers. I have had several types all in plastic and they all broke, so I am not willing to buy more of that kind. I set up a practice row and used scrape yarn, but it gets in the way, plus you have to unhook it to move it up. Any suggestions?
