Six Petal Flower with optional second layer

This six petal flower can be it’s own finished item, such as a coaster, an applique, a pin, a hair clip, bunting, or so many other items. In addition it can be used within other patterns. This flower can be made with or without a second layer flower worked out of the top of the first round. There is a video to show the main flower, a second video to show the layered flower, a written pattern, and a chart for the main flower. Plus photos to help along the way. 🙂

The samples seen in this post were all made with  Lion Brand Heartland yarn (which is made in the USA), and a 6.o0 mm/US J crochet hook.

This video will show you the main flower, and includes some designer tips not in the written pattern:

PATTERN

Note: this is the same pattern as the center of the flower to hexagon granny square originally published by me here. You will find a lot of step by step photos there, as well as instructions written in a way that is a little easier for beginners (less technical).

Abbreviations:
ch ~ chain
hdc ~ half double crochet
dc ~ double crochet
dc cl ~ double crochet cluster *instructions below
st(s) ~ stitch(es)

dc cl worked as follows: Yo, insert hook into st, yo, pull through st, (3 loops on hook), yo, pull through 2 loops (2 loops on hook), yo, insert hook into same st, yo, pull through st, (4 loops on hook), yo, pull through 2 loops (3 loops on hook), yo, pull through all remaining loops

Round 1: Ch 4, join with a sl st to form a ring, ch 2 (counts as first hdc), hdc 11 times into ring, join with a sl st to top ch (12 sts).

Round 2: (change color) Ch 2, dc in same stitch (counts as your first dc cl), ch 1, [dc cl in next st, ch 1] 11 times., join with a slst to top chain of initial ch 2. (12 sets of dc cl, ch 1)

Round 3: (change color) Sl st into first ch-1 sp from round 2, 6 dc in next ch-1 sp, [sl st in next ch-1 sp, 6 dc in next ch-1 sp] 5 times, join with a sl st to first sl st of the round. (6 petals)

Fasten off and weave in ends.

And here is a chart showing that:

If you would like to add the second flower in the center of this one, here is a video:

Here are written instructions, though finding the first st to work into is much more easily explained visually, so I recommend watching the video.

Round 1: Look at the clusters in round 2, they have been pulled together in sets of 2. Sl st into the top of a post in the first round that is centered under one of the sets of clusters, ch 2, skip a post, [sl st into next post (centered under the next set of clusters)] 5 times, sl st into the first ch-2 sp made in the round. (6 ch-2 spaces) Do not fasten off or clip yarn. **This was the very first pattern I wrote, and I made the video years later. When I wrote the pattern, I did not know the proper name for “sl st into the top of a post.” What I was trying to describe is a front post sl st. Sorry for any confusion. You can always watch the video if you are confused.

Round 2: (hdc, 2 dc, hdc, sl st) in the same ch-2 space as the last sl st of round 1 is in, [(sl st, hdc, 2 dc, hdc, sl st) in the next ch-2 space] 5 times. (6 petals made) Fasten off and weave in ends.

  1. Thank you for the tricks you show. I have been crocheting for a number of years and never had anyone actually teach me. I have learned alot from you and have become a much better at my crocheting. It looks professional. Thanks again!

  2. In the video it looks like the hook is going AROUND the post (an ordinary fpslst, “front post slip stitch”), but the instructions say to work INTO the top of the post. Clearly you don’t mean to work into the front or back top loops of the hdc or you would have said so, and besides they are quite full of stitches already. Excluding the top loops we have the so-called “2nd loop” (the ‘wrap’ around the hook at the beginning of an hdc) and the “3rd loop” (goes through the top loops of the previous row). Are you inserting your hook INTO the “2nd loop” only, that is, between the wrap and the rest of the post, or is the hook also going behind the “3rd loop”, (but still not AROUND the entire post?
    Thank you!
