Foundation Crochet: FSC, FHDC, FDC

Foundation crochet stitches are a great alternative to starting your work with chains and then working into those chains. Foundation crochet stitches create the chain and the first row all at once. This makes a long starting row much easier, and it also is a stretchier alternative. This tutorial will explain how to make the foundation single crochet, half double crochet, and double crochet, all with written instructions, photos, and videos.

  1. I am returning to 5 to 6 days of steady chemo infusion on September 2. Mom was a crocheter and I have tons of her needles. Bc I will be unable to do much, I would love to start a blanket but I haven’t crocheted in over 30 years. Do u know of anyone who gives classes in the Staten Island, NY area?

    • I’m sorry, but I do not. You might want to ask on Facebook. You can also learn a lot on YouTube. If you look at my menu tab at the top of this blog, you can click on “learn to crochet” and find some of my videos listed in order for someone who is just learning (or relearning) to crochet. From there you can make a popular classic blanket pattern that is just one row of sc, then one row of dc, and repeat. Quite basic and not a lot to think about if you aren’t feeling great.

My best wishes for healing to you. <3

  2. Example: fhdc 66 – Does the chain 3 count as the first stitch, then add 65 more fhdc? Or would you add 64 more fhdc and do a regular hdc in the last chain made? Thank you!

  3. Thank you! I tried learning the foundation chain before but the person made it complicated in their video. You made it simple and took your time explaining! I always hate making a chain and that first row when there’s a lot of chains.
