Comfy Mochi Cowl - free crochet pattern by Jessie At HomePin

Comfy Mochi Cowl
Crochet Pattern
Easy Skill Level
Designed by Jessie Rayot

This simple cowl is worked in rows and features large diagonal blocks of solid sections and mesh sections. It’s nice and long so it can be wrapped around several times and in many ways. The wonderful color changes of the Crystal Palace Mini Mochi creates a colorful cowl without having tons of ends to weave in, plus, it’s so very soft, you’ll never want to take it off!!

Size:
76″ around
9″ tall

Yarn:
Crystal Palace Yarns Mini Mochi
80% Merino Wool / 20% Nylon, 195 yds/180 m/ 50 gr: 3 balls of color 336 Festival

Hook/Needles:
US 6/G/4.00 mm

Gauge:
17 sts x 11 rows in double crochet makes a 4″ square.

Other supplies:
Yarn Needle

Stitches and Skills used:
ch ~ chain
dc ~ double crochet
dc3tog ~ double crochet 3 together
sp(s) ~ space(s)
st(s) ~ stitch(es)

Getting Started:
To join each new skein of yarn, a wet felted join is recommended. The traditional method of leaving two long ends and weaving them in will also work well with this yarn. Do not use a magic knot, this yarn will not hold it well.

Pattern:
Row 1: Ch 63 (last 3 chs count as dc), 2 dc in 4th ch from hook, dc in each of next 56 ch, dc3tog over last 3 ch. – {60 sts}
Row 2: Ch 2 (does not count as a st), dc3tog over first 3 sts, dc in each of next 56 sts, 3 dc in last st. – {60 sts}
Row 3: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), 2 dc in same st, dc in each of next 56 sts, dc3tog over last 3 sts.
Rows 4-19: Repeat rows 2 & 3 eight more times.
Row 20: Ch 2 (does not count as a st), dc3tog over first 3 sts, [ch 1, skip 1, dc in next st] 28 times, ch 1, 2 dc in last st.
Row 21: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), 2 dc in same st, [ch 1, dc in next ch-1 sp] 28 times, dc3tog over last 3 sts.
Row 22: Ch 2 (does not count as a st), dc3tog over first 3 sts, [ch 1, dc in next ch-1 sp] 27 times, ch 1, skip 1, dc in next st, ch 1, 2 dc in last st.
Rows 23-38: Repeat rows 21 & 22 eight more times.
Row 39: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), 2 dc in same st, dc in each of next 56 ch, dc3tog over last 3 sts.
Row 40: Ch 2 (does not count as a st), dc3tog over first 3 sts, dc in each of next 56 sts, 3 dc in last st.
Row 41: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), 2 dc in same st, dc in each of next 56 sts, dc3tog over last 3 sts.
Rows 42-57: Repeat rows 40 & 41 eight more times.

Repeat rows 20 – 57 once more, then repeat rows 20 – 38 one more time.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Block piece flat.

Fold cowl into a tube, and sew the starting chain and the top of the final row together with left over yarn.

Wear or give and enjoy!

  1. Love this scarf! I’m having trouble coming up with 60 stitches. I had to add an additional chain to start to get the 60 stitches. After the first 2 rows my edges aren’t straight. Is that correct? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

  2. Do you have any pictures you can show about joining the last row to the starting chain? I’m finished with the scarf but something doesn’t look right. The edges don’t line up properly. I counted every row so I know I didn’t drop or add any stitches. It’s so beautiful I don’t want to scrap this whole project. Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks!

    • There are the same number of sts on the first and last row. So you should be able to fold the cowl into a circle and join the diagonal edges together with a whip st.

    • I can see that I’m going to have the same issues joining the scarf together?? I think it’s because it is worked at an angle … How do you join it so that the sides align correctly?? The only way I can think is to twist in the middle but is there a better way???

      • You do not add a twist, you just join the first and last rows together. Lay it flat, fold one end over, then the other end so that the first and last rows line up. You will see that they fit together perfectly to make a tube. If you twist it, it will not work.

  3. I love this pattern. I am at the end and it is only about 6 feet, not 9. I have 104 rows total. Is that correct or have I misread the pattern?

    • There should be 3 sets of solid sections and 3 sets of lace sections. One set of each takes most of 1 Mini Mochi ball. If you don’t have 3 sets, you didn’t do enough

  4. Hi Jessie, I’ve tried multiple times, following your pattern exactly, and am unable to maintain 60 stitches per row!
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated as I’d love to make this cowl!

  5. Hello, I would like to ask a question about a cowl: comfy mochi cowl.

    What does it mean at the end;

Repeat rows 20 – 57 once more, then repeat rows 20 – 38 one more time.

Does this mean I have to repeat all these rows one more time?

I am from the Netherlands, and I truly don’t understand these lines!
The rest of the pattern is easy to follow. And it is a beautiful cowl!

  6. Hello Jessie, thank you for sharing the pattern, it’s lovely, however, I’m having an issue with row 22, it says 27 times and I have too many stiches left to get to the end with 2 dc in the same stitch. Can you help me to clear this up. Thank you in advance,

    • Check to be sure the previous row is correct. It should work as it is worked over 60 sts, and creates 60 sts, just like all the rows.

  7. I thought it might help others to share my experience when working up this simple yet lovely pattern… I, too, struggled to get 60 stitches in the first couple rows. I redid them countless times but always came up short. I ended up chaining 63 to start, because it makes more sense…. the first three chains count as stitch 1, then 2 more in the next chain, plus the 56…. So that brings you to 59, plus the decrease stitch to make 60. Once you get these first rows sorted out the rest goes smoothly as long as you pay attention. It helps to remember that you are stitching on an angle so it will need to decrease on one end each time and increase at the other to make up the difference. I have yet to join mine, but I really love how it turned out! I used Malabrigo Finito yarn and it has a great feel to it.

  8. Hi Jessie,

I am new to reading patterns so I apologize, but I have a question… Rows 4-19 Repeat rows 2 & 3 eight more times.
So this is the way that I am understanding it please let me know if I have it correct.

    Rows 4 to 19 is 16 Rows so do I do rows 2 & 3, 8 Times for all 16 rows ie:

    Row 4 – 2 & 3 Eight Times
    Row 5 – 2 & 3 Eight Times
    Row 6 – 2 & 3 Eight Times etc for a total of 256 rows?

    Thank you so much! 🙂

  9. Hi Jessie… ☺️… I love this pattern and I have started making it. But I am a bit confused… I m getting the two sides of the width slant , which will make the pattern after joining the two ends…but my confusion is that it’s increasing length wise , so the edges are slant lengthwise….where am I going wrong..?? Could you please help me…can I post the pic of my work here..??
    Thank you…☺️..

    • One side should be increasing and one side should be decreasing. I don’t think you can post a picture here, but you can in my facebook group linked at the bottom of the pattern, then just tag me there and we can figure it out!

  10. My question is about the yarn. When I click on your link it takes me to Amazon and some cook books. I am mainly curious as to the weight of the yarn you used so I can find something comparable.

  11. I’m having trouble with row 21. I have 60 stitches in row 19 and I followed the instructions for row 20, but with row 21 I only have one stitch left when I am supposed to be doing the double crochet 3 together

    Reply
    • I don’t know what you could be doing wrong, just double check 20 and 21 to be sure you have everything down right.

  12. Hi Jessie,
I am a new crocheter and I have just started the comfy mochi cowl. I am stuck at the end of ROW 1! Directions say dc3tog over last 3 st (60sts). I do have 3 stitches left but dc3tog gives me more than 60 stitches. Any chance there is a video of this? I would appreciate any help you can give me.
    Thank you

    • You should have 59 sts before you get to this part, then you dc3tog and you are up to 60. It’s on my to do soon list to update this pattern and add a video, as the yarn is discontinued anyway. However, it may still be a month or two.

  13. I’m loving this pattern. I’m using chroma yarn in Vermont, which is a similar color to the one used. After reading the comments I was worried I would have a hard time, but so far so good. For those struggling to keep 60 stitches be sure to count your dc3tog as one stitch and to add 2 dcs where indicated. For those who are having issues with seaming, it looks like you just lay it flat, fold one end up and one end down and the two diagonal edges meet in the middle. On the mesh section I’ve found it helpful to use a stitch marker to mark the first stitch in each row.

    • I am actually planning an update of the pattern because the yarn I used is discontinued and I have some Chroma yarn for it! I’m also going to include a video because I thought it was easy, but it seams a lot of people are thrown off by how to count the stitches. I’ll also include seaming in the video. 🙂
