Microwave Bowl Cozy Crochet Pattern

Construction

Make the bowl cozy until it fits around the bowl of your choice with the short sides going up to desired height. The long sides (with the ch-2 corners) will be longer, but that will be taken care of later. Once cozy is the desired size, cut yarn, and weave in ends. Then go onto finishing.

The small bowl cozies in the pattern pictures were worked through round 8. The medium bowl cozies were worked through round 10. The larger (glass) bowl cozies were worked through round 13. In hindsight, I think making the cozies go to almost the top of the bowls would work better. Luckily for you, the pattern goes up to round 17 so you are good to go!

Finishing

  • Wash and dry bowl cozies in the same manner you will wash them when needed during use. I tossed mine in the washer and dryer along with some other crochet and knit kitchen items.
  • Place a bowl in the bowl cozy, then shape the cozy around the bowl.
  • Pinch the two sides so the ch-2 sections are lined up on the folds. Then measure how much the sides need to be pinched for the cozy to fit snugly around the bowl. Write down the measurement or pin the pinches, then remove the bowl.
  • Cut two 12″ pieces of yarn, then use them to sew the pinches shut across the top. Start at the inside of the pinch, sew to the fold, then sew back to the inside, tie the two ends together securely and clip the yarn leaving 3/4″ tails.

Happy Stitching!

FAQs

There are 17 rounds, but the pattern says to stop when the cozy is the size I want, what do I do?

When your cozy is the size you want, do not make any more rounds. Move on to the Finishing section.

How do I know what yarn is microwave safe?

My suggestion is to use 100% cotton yarn only. However, the only way to be sure is to contact the yarn company, who, like me, will most likely not want to give you a definite answer for legal reasons.

Is there any sewing involved?

You will not need a sewing machine with a walking foot, rotary cutter, seam allowance marking pen, or any other fancy tools. Heck, you don’t even need a ruler. You will simply use some of your leftover yarn, or some cotton thread, to hand stitch little darts (I call them “pinches” in the pattern because you pinch to make them). It’s super easy. If you’re worried, grab a pin or two to get them right where you want them before you sew.

  1. Thank you for the pattern. I love this idea for having a soup night and everyone’s bowl gets nestled in a cheerfully colored cozy!!! Almost like the little scarves for mugs of hot coco or wine glass charms!

    • We had taco night last night and the littles decided we needed to use the cozies (even thought the lettuce, cheese, and such wasn’t hot). It was very pretty. 🙂

  2. ***** Sorry, I am reposting this because I forgot to click the follow up…

I guess I got scared when it was mentioned to make sure to have a microwave safe yarn. Do you have any idea of which yarn might not be safe? Are cottons safe….maybe acrylic not. I so want to make some for grandkids but wouldn’t want there to be a fire….

    • The yarn listed in the pattern is what I used. I have used the covers a LOT, and had no problem. I can’t tell you what is or is not microwave safe because I’m not the yarn manufacturer, all I can tell you is that they yarn in the pattern has worked for me, and I would **THINK** that most cotton yarns would be safe. If you are really worried, your best bet is to contact the yarn manufacturer and ask.

    • I have made many fabric cozies. The pattern calls for 100% cotton fabric, batting and thread. My guess is that cotton yarn would be best. The only thing I’m not sure of is the size of the pattern. It may not acct for shrinkage.

  3. Like ypurbowl cozies but never heard in my life microwave safe yarn and you just listed the brand of yarn
Yu didn’t say if its ctton etc to the persons question above as I’m curou too
And could you let me know what you mean as one bowl etc was thru round 8 and next bowl thru round 13 etc
As don’t understand if you mean end at ROW 8 or what or do you o all the rounds to last round really like yourcozies

    • The yarn I used it cotton. If you click the links to the yarn, you’ll see that. The pattern states that you work it until it is the size needed for your bowl. Bowls come in many different sizes, so you just keep going until it fits. I listed how many rounds I made for each size bowl in the pictures because people usually ask those things. I’m not sure what your asking about rows verses rounds, because the pattern is worked entirely in rounds.

      • I have a question about washing the cotton cozies. I’ve made them with 100% cotton fabric. Now I like the idea of crocheting them. Have you washed yours and how do they hold up in the way of shrinkage?

  4. Jesse what I’m asking is you say small bowl is worked thru round 8
Medium bowl is worked thru round 10
Large bowl is worked thru round 13
What I’m asking is there are 17 rounds
So say for small bowl YA worked thru round 8 after that do you go to finishing and skip the rest of the rounds as there are 17 before you go to finishing

  5. Jesse my question above doesnt make sense as spelling wrong what I said one stupid question for
You so the rounds 14 thru 17 are just if you wanted to make bowl cozies other than the large one

    • You just make the cozy until it is the size you need. Once it is the size you need, you stop. There are 17 rounds written so that you can make a cozy for nearly any bowl that will fit in a microwave. The sizes I listed in the pattern are just what fit on MY bowls, you need to make what fits on YOUR bowls, so stop after whatever round makes the cozy come up to the height you want on your bowl.

  7. Would other Red Heart yard work, can’t find Red Heart Creme De La Creme in stores in my small town, only Red Heart worsted? Does yarn have to be 100% cotton to be safe in microwave? Want to make for some gifts, am a beginner. I like the idea you came up with, have pinned a lot of patterns that I want to try once I can crochet good.

    • It really should be 100% cotton. I’m honestly not sure what would happen with other yarns in the microwave. Some may melt, some may get hot, some may let off bad fumes, there are so many things that could happen, I would play it safe and go with a 100% cotton.

    • I use peaches and cream cotton yarn . Works well and can be bought at Walmart, just about any store that has yarn section .

      Reply
      • I would think any 100% cotton yarn would work as cotton yarn takes the heat better than acrylic yarn. Lily Sugar & Cream, Peaches & Cream, Bernat Handicrafter, Lion Brand or any other brands.

  8. Is there a chance that you will be doing a video. I’ve seen a lot of crocheters looking for one cause they can’t read and can only do visual.

  9. My question is why do you leave the tail of yarn on the pinch? Why would it not be weaved in after sewing. To me in the picture it looks unfinished.. so is there a reason to leave it ?

  10. I just saw your pattern on pintert! I absolutely love it! It’s a wonderful idea. Especially if your heating something inthe microwave. I’m always getting a dish towel to wrap the bowl with. Thank you for sharing your idea with your fellow crafters.

  11. l made a couple of bowl covers to use but did not use 100% cotton..l decided not to make them usable within the microwave but instead just put bowl in cover after heating..also when serving a meal in a bowl that has been cooked on the stove…

  13. Jessie, I found your pattern easy to follow & the instructions to fit to each one’s bowls makes sense. I’ve made 1 cozy (medium) w/Lily Cotton “Sugar ‘n Cream” in Summer Print. It’s really pretty & functional. However, I’m considering making the pinched sides adjustable for the different circumferences of my Fiesta bowls. This is an item that I will be using frequently b/c I LOVE soups. Thanks so much for the pattern.
P.S. I’m making a set of these for my daughter next time that I’m in TX to get the bowl sizes.

  14. I was wondering when you say to sew together at the pinch are you sewing the whole fold top to bottom like a seam? or are you just sewing the top together like one stitch?

  15. Have you thought about making it with sc instead of dc so it is thicker? I am worried about maybe getting scalded through the holes. I have made two so far and they are linked to your page on Ravelry.
