I just love the linen stitch!! In this post I will teach you how to crochet the linen stitch, AKA the moss stitch. I have a video to show the stitch, written instructions, and a chart and pattern for a practice piece as seen in the pictures. Don’t forget to check out the rest of the Stitchopedia.

This video will show you how to crochet the linen stitch.

Written instructions

Abbreviations:
ch ~ chain
sc ~ single crochet
st(s) ~ stitch(es)

Row 1: Make an odd number of chains, sc in second ch from hook, sc in next ch, * ch 1, skip 1, sc in next ch, repeat from * to end of row.

Row 2: Sc in first 2 sc, * ch 1, sc in next ch-1 space, repeat from * until 2 sts remain, ch 1, sc in last st.

Repeat row 2 as many times as needed.

NOTE: There is not turning chain to start row 2. It is not necessary with sc, however, if you want one, you can make a ch at the start of row 2, and then continue with row 2 as written.

Practice piece:

For this practice piece, you will use 2 colors to help show the various looks that can be created with different size stripes in linen stitch.

For row 1, ch 21, and continue with the linen st as described above. Make the rows in the following colors:
Rows 1~4: Color A
Row 5: Color B
Rows 6~8: Color A
Rows 9~10: Color B
Rows 11~12: Color A
Rows 13~15: Color B
Row 16: Color A
Rows 17~20: Color B

And here is a chart as well:

  1. Great tutorial for the linen stitch, thank you so much for sharing. Love the explanation about the turning stitch and the starting chains. Looking forward to playing with this stitch.

  2. Hi, I want to do a 16″ cushion, but no matter how many times I try I am getting a problem. I make a chain the width of the cushion, allowing plenty of slack; but after Ive done a couple of linen stitch rows it has shrunk so much it will only cover two thirds… So I try again, guessing how much longer to make the chain… but it is still too short. I keep trying and can’t get it just right; Ive searched the net and asked everywhere if there’s a pattern, but the only pattern is one for 3 strands together and a large hook; I wanted to use DK with just one strand. Is there a formula you’ve figured out? I cannot for the life of me work out how much bigger to make the chain! Any thoughts greatly appreciated… Thanks

    • There is a great way to figure it out. You will have to make a gauge swatch. Start out by making a chain about 7″ long, then work in linen stitch until the piece is at least 4″ tall. Measure across the piece – it won’t be 7 inches anymore because linen stitch always tightens up the starting chain. Measure 4″ across and count how many single crochets you have. That number will tell you how many sets of (sc, ch 1) are in 4″ in your gauge. So multiply that number by 4 to see how many sets of (sc, ch 1) are in 16″, and multiply it again by 2 to get your starting chain. I hope that helps!

  3. Thank you for this tutorial! However, I’m still in the “beginner’s” stage of crocheting, so this question may seem silly to you.

The first sentence in your written instructions says, “Row 1: Make an odd number of chains.” However, in your video, you say to start with an even number of stitches. So, I’m a bit confused. I may be misunderstanding what you’re saying in the video, but if you could explain this, I would greatly appreciate it!

    Thank you.

  4. Your row 2 doesn’t match the video. It should start with sc in first sc sc in ch1 space. After that it’s right. I don’t want people who want the written pattern to not be able to do it correctly.
