Inside: Follow along with this free knit pattern to create a stylish and comfortable slouchy knit hat. You’ll love the horizontal ribs on this hat. Make it a less slouchy and keep your ears warmer by folding the bottom up.

This pattern was originally published on 12/9/2014. The most recent update was made on 12/14/2023.

I made this hat for a friend who wanted a slouchy hat in natural colors, and this was what I came up with. It is quite simple and a quick knit, great for bringing along with you if you need a project to take with you in waiting rooms or while traveling!

The ribbed brim band can be folded up to make the hat a little less slouchy, and add extra warmth around the ears. I love wearing mine this way!

Of course, you don’t have to fold it up, leave it unfolded for extra slouch.

  1. I usually crochet and it has been a while since I knitted but does this pattern call for dp needles or circular needles or did I miss that?

    Reply
    • Sorry, I didn’t put that in because I tend to leave that to the preference of the knitter. You could use dp needles for the whole thing, a set of 26″ circs and dps to finish, or a long (36″ or longer) set of circs for the whole thing using the magic loop method. Whatever way you are most comfortable with. 🙂

  2. I have been looking for slouchy hats this year, to go with some wrist warmers that I have designed. This looks perfect.
    THANK YOU!!

  3. It’s my first time knitting a hat, but I have been knitting for 7 yrs. what size cables do you need for the size 8 needles to knit in the round? Also, what is the weight of the yarn? I have a nice size stock pile so I want to use some from that. Thank you!

    • I usually use 16″ for hats (then dpns or 24-36″ with the magic loop method for the decreases). The weight is worsted, but check your gauge, that’s the important thing for the proper size.
