Felted Floral Pin Cushion ~ Free Crochet Pattern by Jessie At HomePin

In an attempt to stop leaving yarn needles in the arm of the couch, I decide to make some pincushions. This floral pincushion is crocheted with a feltable yarn, and then felted so it can be stuffed tight without the stuffing poking out.

Size:
4 inches across after felting

Yarn:
Red Heart Eco~Ways Bamboo Wool was used in the sample, but it is discontinued. Any feltable worsted weight yarn will work. A sport or DK weight will work as well, however the final pincushion will be smaller.

Hook:
US 8/H/5 mm

Gauge:
Not so important, though my flowers measured 5″ across before felting.

Stitches and Skills used:
ch ~ chain
sl st ~ slip stitch
sc ~ single crochet
hdc ~ half double crochet
st(s) ~ stitch(es)
sp(s) ~ space(s)

Other supplies:
Yarn needle
Small amount of stuffing

Getting Started:
There are no starting chains in the rounds of this pattern, the first st is simply made in the indicated st in the pattern.
Make the first 2 rounds in one color, and the remaining rounds in another.

Pattern: (make 2)
Round 1: Ch 4, join with a sl st to form a ring, 6 sc in ring. ~ 6 sts (not counting ring)
Round 2: 2 sc in each st, sl st to top of first sc to join round. ~ 12 sts
Round 3: (Hdc, ch 2, hdc) in first st, sc in next st, *(hdc, ch 2, hdc) in next st, sc in next st, repeat from * around, sl st to top of first hdc to join round. ~ 24 sts
Round 4: *(Hdc, ch 2, hdc) in ch 2 sp, sc in next 2 sts, repeat from * around, sl st to top of first hdc to join round. ~ 30 sts
Round 5: *(Hdc, ch 2, hdc) in ch 2 sp, sc in next 3 sts, repeat from * around, sl st to top of first hdc to join round. ~ 36 sts
Round 6: *(Hdc, ch 2, hdc) in ch 2 sp, sc in next 4 sts, repeat from * around, sl st to top of first hdc to join round. ~ 42 sts
Round 7: *(Hdc, ch 2, hdc) in ch 2 sp, sc in next 5 sts, repeat from * around, sl st to top of first hdc to join round. ~ 48 sts
Round 8: *3 hdc in ch 2 sp, sc in next 6 sts, repeat from * around, sl st to top of first hdc to join round. ~ 54 sts
Round 9: *Skip 1, 2 sc in each of next 2 sts, sc in next 7 sts, repeat from * around, sl st to top of first sc to join round. ~ 66 sts

Fasten off and weave in ends. My 2 halves were about 5″ across at this point.

Here is a chart for you as well.

Felt the 2 halves. I did this by tossing them in with a load of laundry twice. If you hand felt them you will most likely get a nicer result. To hand felt, fill a bowl/sink with hot water and a bit of dish soap, put on gloves and agitate the pieces with your hands. Or use some other method of felting, if that is what you prefer!
When mine were felted, I did have to steam them into shape a bit.

With a piece of yarn or quilting thread, sew the two halves together, leaving one of the sides open to stuff.

Stuff the cushion and sew the last side closed. I stuffed mine very full because I wanted the pincushion to be firm.

Tack around the centers of the flowers to pull them together.

Make large stitches around the center of each side to pull in the flower petals. Do this by sewing down through the cushion at the edge of the center section, wrapping the yarn around the cushion, then sewing down through the same place; repeat for each petal.
