I have a fun free crochet pattern for you today. Have you made something other then a scarf out of the ever~popular net yarn and have some left over with no clue what to do with it? I have the perfect solution for you. You can use it to make a fun, fluffy, puffy, bouncy hair band! All you need is a plain hair band and two or more yards of net yarn.

So here is the video. It is pretty easy to follow, but I have still included written instructions with photos after the video.

Supplies Hair band Net/ruffle yarn, 1 to 4 yards, depending on the size of the puff you want, or if you want to continue all the way around the hair band Pattern ~ worked using the top loops of the net yarn only Insert crochet hook through the hair band and pick up a top loop of the net, about 3 inches in from the end of the yarn. Pull the loop up through the hair band.

Working in every other top loop, pick up 7 more loops. Insert the hook back through the hair band again, and pick up one more loop. Pull the last loop picked up through all the rest of the loops on the hook, leaving just one loop on the hook.

*Pick up the next loop (do not skip one). Working in every other top loop, pick up 6 more loops. Insert the hook back through the hair band again, and pick up one more loop. Pull the last loop picked up through all the rest of the loops on the hook, leaving just one loop on the hook. Repeat from * at least 2 more times, until the puff is of desired size. If you want to continue all the way around the hair band, be sure you can still stretch the band. If you do not make enough repeats you will not be able to stretch the hair band enough to use it. Clip yarn leaving a 3 inch tail, and pull entire tail through the last loop on the hook. Tie the two ends (start and finish) into a square knot.

    • Thank you! I have been using 4 yards and going all the way around the hair bands to make scrunchies for holiday gifts. My girls have a bunch of them as well. They love them.

    • Thank you! My girls love them. Kyla has a lot of hair so I have several with the yarn all the way around that we pop on around a bun. She says it makes her look like a princess ballerina!

  1. Love the poof… what about ruffle socks. Do you know how to make them using this yarn? I want to make some but not real sure on how to get started.

    • Hmm…I never really thought about that. You could just catch the top hole when you go into a stitch to just make the net yarn lay on top. Maybe?

  2. On the pic of the net yarn hair puff the white to brown pic the puff looks so long compared to mine did you knit or crochet rows and them put it on rubber band? I love them and do a lot of ponytails I have long hair and at time needs to be pulled back I work in health care and some of the women I work with want them too. Could you please help me out. THANK YOU love your work!!!!!

    • It could be the yarn itself. I made them from several different brands and some are wider than others. I have noticed that some of them make tighter and shorter puffs, and some of them make longer and limper puffs. Just look at the yarn in the store and find one that is wider when the net is stretched.

      I hope that helps 🙂

  3. So cute and such a good way to use up my scraps of ruffle yarn. Will make some of these for our spring bazaar at our local hospital. Thanks for the pattern!
