Giant Cable Rug
Knit Pattern
Intermediate Skill Level
Designed by Jessie Rayot

I created this rug for my daughter’s Pink Princess Room. I used some of the copious amounts of Red Heart Super Saver yarn I have in my stash, but you can use 4 strands of nearly any worsted weight yarn you have. You can also play around with different weights and numbers of strands. The pattern will still work, you will just change the size of your rug. Suggestions are also included on how to change the size of your rug by increasing the rows and stitches.

Here is the rug in Kyla’s (not yet finished) Pink Princess Room.

Skill Level:
Intermediate

Yarn:
Red Heart Super Saver, or other worsted weight yarn. Hold 4 strands together as 1 when knitting

Needles:
US 35/19 mm

Gauge:
Not so important, as it is a rug, and you are just going until it is the size you want!

Size:
Any, the sample measures 38″x44″

Stitches and abbreviations used:
co ~ cast on
K ~ knit
P ~ purl
Inc ~ increase

Getting Started:
Holding 4 strands of worsted weight yarn together as one.

For the cables, I used my left index finger as a cable needle. 🙂

For help with the Join~As~You~Go method, see these videos.

To make rug longer or shorter, repeat rows 2~17 of center panel more or less times, than be sure to increase or decrease the row count of the remaining panels the same amount.

To make rug narrower, decrease the co amount of panels 2 and 4, and/or decrease the co amount of panels 1 and 5 by 3 or 6.

To make rug wider, increase the co amount of panels 2 and 4, and/or increase the co amount of panels 1 and 5 by 3 or 6. You can also add on more panels, or a wider border.

Weave in all ends.

Add on a border.

I made a crochet border, but you could pick up the stitches and make a knit border. Just remember on the sides there is one loop for every 2 rows.

My crochet border was worked with 3 strands of yarn and a 9.00mm (N/M) hook. I worked it as follows:
On the sides I worked 1 sc in the second loop, [3 dc in next loop, 1 sc in next loop] all the way across the side, then 6 dc in the corner, for the top and bottom I worked 1 sc in the third st, [skip a st, 3 dc in next st, skip a st, 1 sc in next st] all the way across, then 6 dc in the corner.
