This fashionable cowl works up quickly with just 1 ball of Willow Yarns Dappled. It is crocheted using the linen stitch in the round with a mobius join; this puts the starting chain through the center of the cowl, and makes each round add stitches to both the top and the bottom of the cowl. It is fun to make, and the stitch and yarn work wonderfully together to create beautiful texture and color changes. The cowl also works up quickly because it is made holding 2 strands of yarn together as one, so the gauge is a bit larger.

Size:
4.5″ tall and 22″ around

Yarn:
Willow Yarns, dappled 1 ball in canyons #0002

Hook:
US I/9/5.5 mm

Gauge:
16 sts in 4″ of linen stitch holding 2 strands of yarn as one

Stitches and Skills used:
ch ~ chain
sl st ~ slip stitch
sc ~ single crochet
st(s) ~ stitch(es)

Getting Started:
Hold 2 strands together as 1 throughout pattern. This can be done with 1 ball by pulling out both ends (one from the center and one from the outside of the ball) and holding them together as one.

Pattern:
Round 1: Ch 97, sc in 4th ch from hook, (ch 1, skip 1, sc in next ch) to end of starting chain, fold the strip into a loop, placing ends next to each other and being careful not to twist, flip the end without the hook down, creating a half twist (see photos), ch 1, sc in ch sp, (ch 1, sc in next ch sp) around to beginning of round,ch 1, sl st to bottom of fist sc made to join round. Your cowl will appear to have 2 rounds done at this point and will have a half twist in it.

The top two images below show the ends lined up, and then after the flip, the bottom two show the join after the flip and then after the completion of round 1.

Round 2: (Sc in next ch sp, ch 1) around, sl st to top of first sc of round to join. This will appear to add 2 rounds to your cowl.

Repeat round 2:  Until there is not enough yarn to complete another full round or to desired size.

Clip yarn and weave in ends.

Wear or give and enjoy!

  1. Just wondering how many total rounds there are as it only lists 2 but the pattern looks to have definitely more than 2.

    • Oh dear. I seem to have missed the “repeat round 2” bit! I added it in. Not sure what happened there, but it should be all good now.

  2. I’m afraid this pattern has me baffled. It is terribly confusing. I do not understand the part about joining the ends of the chain together. And what is a mobius join?? That is not explained. I think i’d better move on to another pattern. I have been crocheting for a few years now and usually do not have any problem understanding written patterns. 🙁

    • The mobius join is the way this pattern is joined into the round. Basically, you work all the way across the starting chain, then you line it up to join into a circle. When you line it up to join it into a circle you make sure there are no twists and the very first stitch is right next to the last stitch. Normally you would continue by making the next stitch on top of the first stitch and continuing to work around, but this is a little different. You take that first stitch and flip it down, creating a half twist in your circle, then you make the next stitch in the bottom of the first stitch (the part you just flipped so the bottom of the stitch is now facing up). You then continue around. If you do not know what a mobius strip is, you may want to google it, it should help you understand better.
