Last week I shared a free crochet pattern for a vintage heart in two sizes. This week I am sharing a way to turn those hearts into a playful mobile.

Yarn:
Aunt Lydia’s Baker’s Cotton

Hook:
US 4/E/3.5mm

Gauge:
Not really important

Stitches and Skills used:
ch ~ chain
sl st ~ slip stitch
sc ~ single crochet
st(s) ~ stitch(es)

Other supplies:
You will also need a round frame of some sort. Mine is a wire I turned into a circle, and then wrapped with masking tape because I thought it was a bit too thin. My circle measures 6″ in diameter.
9 large vintage hearts in various colors
9 small vintage hearts in various colors
9 split stitch marker
Spray starch

Frame:
Once you have your frame, you will need to wrap it with your yarn. This could take a while.
After wrapping the frame, sc around the entire frame, do not clip yarn.
Place the 9 stitch markers evenly around the frame.

Adding the hearts:
* Ch 20, sl st into the divot at the top of one of the large hearts, sl st around the last round of the heart down to the bottom point, ch 15, sl st into the divot at the top of one of the small hearts, sl st around the last round of the heart down to the bottom point, ch 7, (3 dc, ch 2, sl st) all in the back loop of the 3rd ch from the hook, ch 2, sl st in each of the next 4 ch, sl st in the bottom point of the small heart, sl st around the other side of the last round of the heart up to the divot, sl st in the bottom loop of each ch up to the next heart, sl st in the bottom point of the large heart, sl st around the other side of the last round of the heart up to the divot, sl st in the bottom loop of each ch up to the frame, sc in each sc to the next marker, remove marker and repeat from * all the way around the frame, adding 10 ch to the first st of ch each time you repeat.

Weave in ends.

Starch the hearts at this point. You could starch them before starting, however, I don’t like trying to crochet into something that has been starched, and I was worried I would just mangle them at that point anyway.

Add on hanging chains.

Hang and enjoy!
