Evens and Odds Mitered Coaster ~ Free Knit Pattern by Jessie At HomePin

Evens and Odds Mitered Coasters

Designed by Jessie Rayot

While playing around with mitered squares to make coasters, I realized they could be made with an even or odd number of stitches, depending on how the decreases are made. So, rather than making that choice for you, I thought I would write a double pattern for you today. One mitered square coaster that starts with an even number of stitches and uses two decreases in the center, and one mitered square coaster that starts with an odd number of stitches and uses a double decrease in the center. Of course, there are still many more ways to make a mitered square, these are just my current favorites for evens and odds.

Special Stitches
ssk ~ slip slip knit: (Slip next stitch knit wise) 2 times, insert left needle through the front of the stitches and knit them together.
~or~
The same look can be accomplished by knitting 2 stitches together through the back loop; in other words, insert the right needle through the back loops of the next 2 sts and knit them together.

ddc ~ double decrease: Slip next st knitwise, k2tog, pass slipped st over last st made.

Getting Started:
Have fun with the colors. Here are some of the color choices I made:
1) Use a variegated yarn.
2) Make 2 rows in red, 3 rows in white, 3 rows in blue, and repeat until done. You will not need to cut the yarn at the color changes this way, just carry the colors up the side! ~ Try switching the orders of the colors for each coaster to make them a bit different
3) Make them in just one color.
4) Use one color until you have decreased by 1/3 your stitches, then switch to the next color for another 1/3, then switch to the last color. ~ You can also do this with just 2 colors switching after you have decreased by 1/2 your stitches.

Evens Pattern:

2-Decrease-MiterPin

CO an even number of sts, placing a marker after half the sts. (For the sample, I cast on 32, placing the marker after 16)
Row 1: K to 2 sts before the marker, k2tog, slip marker, ssk, k to end.
Row 2: K all.
Repeat rows 1&2: until 2 sts remain.

Bind off.

Odds Pattern:

Double-Decrease-for-Odds-MiterPin

CO an odd number of sts, placing a marker 1 st before the middle st. Another way to figure out where to place the maker is to subtract 3 from the cast on amount, then divide by 2 and place the marker after that number of sts. (For the sample, I cast on 33, placing the marker after st 18 ~ 33-3=30, 30/2=15)
Row 1: (wrong side) Turn, k to 3 st before marker, ddc, remove marker, k1, replace marker, k to end.
Row 2: (right side) Turn, k all, slipping marker when it is reached.
Repeat rows 1&2: until 3 sts remain, turn, ddc last 3 sts.

Finish off.
