I received a copy of Pocket Amigurumi by Sabrina Somers and I was immediately taken by the color monsters it contained. They are bright and cheery and sure to bring love and joy to whomever they go home with.

[pullquote width=”600″ float=”center”]At 4in high, these manga-inspired plushie creatures are perfect little companions that can peek out of a pocket. Using just one size hook, readers can crochet a partner or a whole team of beasts with unique powers, from a sprout-like sidekick and spiky wolf guardian, to a springy mouse and a fiery cat![/pullquote]

As with most books, Sabrina starts off with an introduction. She then moves on to a “before you start collecting” section, which has everything you need to know to succeed in making these tiny little plushies. She goes over all the materials you will need, leaving nothing out. There is then a crochet crash course which shows stitches used in the patterns. Then there is information on making up and stuffing your creations. Nothing is left to chance if you read the beginning of this book before you start to crochet. Sabrina has explained it all to you.

Next, of course, is the part we all want the most – the patterns for the adorable monsters. There are 20 monsters total. The patterns include little templates for the eyes and some cheeks which are cut from felt and glued on (you could hand stitch them on if you like). The patterns themselves are clear and easy to follow.

Someone who is brand new to crocheting may have a bit of a struggle getting started with these patterns, because amigurumi in general is a more intermediate skill. However, Sabrina has explained things very well in this book, and if you are a determined beginner you could certainly give it a go!
