Crossed Square – a 12″ afghan square!

This square may be labeled intermediate due to the post stitches, but it’s actually pretty easy! The varying stitch height creates a fun color pattern, and the post stitches give the square some texture. Try playing with colors, or even making the whole thing in one color. Just have fun with it.

12″ square after blocking

Yarn:
Lion Brand Heartland (100% acrylic, worsted weight) in 3 colors

Hook:
US-J/10, 6.0mm

Gauge:
13 sts x 7 rows = 4” [10 cm] in dc

Pattern:
Rnd 1: With Color A, ch 3, sl st to first ch made to form a loop, ch 5 (counts as first dc and ch 2 here and throughout), [3 dc in loop, ch 2] 3 times, 2 dc in loop, sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch 5. – {3 sts on each side}
Rnd 2: Sl st in ch-2 sp, switch to Color B, ch 5, 2 dc in same ch-2 sp, dc in each of next 3 dc, *(2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch-2 sp, dc in each of next 3 sts; repeat from * 2 more times, dc in ch-2 sp, sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch 5. – {7 sts on each side}
Rnd 3: Sl st in ch-2 sp, switch to Color A, ch 3, sc in same ch-2 sp, sc in each of next 3 dc, fptr in dc from rnd 1, skip 1 dc, sc in each of next 3 dc, *(sc, ch 2, sc) in ch-2 sp, sc in each of next 3 dc, fptr in dc from rnd 1, skip 1 dc, sc in each of next 3 dc; repeat from * 2 more times, sc in ch-2 sp, sl st to 1st ch of beginning ch 3. – {9 sts on each side}
Rnd 4: Sl st in ch-2 sp, switch to Color B, ch 5, 2 dc in same ch-2 sp, dc in each of next 9 sts, *(2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch-2 sp, dc in each of next 9 sts; repeat from * 2 more times, dc in ch-2 sp, sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch 5. – {13 sts on each side}
