Laced Stripes – a free crochet hat pattern

I love the laced up detail in this hat. It is sure to stand out from the crowd! Add in a few stripes for a little color and you have a super fun winter hat. Make it an just about any size, so you can make some for the whole family. Enjoy!

Size:
Toddler (Child, Adult Medium, Adult Large)
Fits: 18 (20, 22, 24)
Measures (with 1/2″ for lacing): 16.5 (18.25, 20.25, 22)

Yarn:
King Cole Big Value Chunky, Damson 1748:Color A
King Cole Big Value Chunky, Bayleaf 1745:Color B
Amounts needed will vary by size, but one skein of each will work for any size. Adult medium used 80g of color A and 65g of color B.

Hook:
US-J/10, 6.0mm (Knitter’s Pride Waves used)

Gauge:
13 sts x 15 rows = 4” [10 cm] in sc

Other supplies:
yarn needle (Clover darning needle used)

ch – chain
sc – single crochet
sp(s) – space(s)
st(s) – stitch(es)

Getting Started:
This hat is easily adjusted to size with the lacing, making it great for growing kids!
When changing colors, work previous st to just before final yo, switch to new color, yo and pull through, finishing st.

Pattern:

Hat Top:
Row 1: Ch 3, join with a sl st to form a loop, (ch 3, 6 sc, ch 1, sc) all in loop. – {10 sts}
Row 2: Turn, ch 1 (does not count as a st here or throughout), sc in first sc, sc in ch-1 sp, 2 sc in each of next 6 sc, 2 sc in ch-3. – {16 sts}
Row 3: Turn, ch 3 (counts as 2 sts here and throughout), skip first 2 sc, [2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc] 6 times, ch 1, skip 1, sc in last st. – {22 sts}
Row 4: Turn, ch 1, sc in first sc, sc in ch-1 sp, [2 sc in next sc, sc in each of next 2 sc] 6 times, 2 sc in ch-3. – {28 sts}
Row 5: Turn, ch 3, skip first 2 sc, [2 sc in next sc, sc in each of next 3 sc] 6 times, ch 1, skip 1, sc in last st. – {34 sts}
Row 6: Turn, ch 1, sc in first sc, sc in ch-1 sp, [2 sc in next sc, sc in each of next 4 sc] 6 times, 2 sc in ch-3. – {40 sts}
Row 7: Turn, ch 3, skip first 2 sc, [2 sc in next sc, sc in each of next 5 sc] 6 times, ch 1, skip 1, sc in last st. – {46 sts}
Row 8: Turn, ch 1, sc in first sc, sc in ch-1 sp, [2 sc in next sc, sc in each of next 6 sc] 6 times, 2 sc in ch-3. – {52 sts}
Size Toddler move onto Hat Middle row 1.
Row 9:
 Turn, ch 3, skip first 2 sc, [2 sc in next sc, sc in each of next 7 sc] 6 times, ch 1, skip 1, sc in last st. – {58 sts}
Size Child move onto Hat Middle row 2.
Row 10:
Turn, ch 1, sc in first sc, sc in ch-1 sp, [2 sc in next sc, sc in each of next 8 sc] 6 times, 2 sc in ch-3. – {64 sts}
Size Adult Medium move onto Hat Middle row 1.
Row 11
Turn, ch 3, skip first 2 sc, [2 sc in next sc, sc in each of next 7 sc] 6 times, ch 1, skip 1, sc in last st. – {58 sts}
Size Adult Large move onto Hat Middle row 2.

Hat Middle:
Row 1 and all odd rows: 
Turn, ch 3, skip first 2 sc, sc until 2 sc remain, ch 1, skip 1, sc in last st. – {52, 58, 64, 70) sts}
Row 2 and all even rows: Turn, ch 1, sc in first sc, sc in ch-1 sp, sc in each sc across, 2 sc in ch-3.
Work for 6, (7, 10, 11) rows. – 14, (16, 20, 22) rows total at this point

Hat Bottom:
Row 1:
 Switch to Color B, turn, ch 3, skip first 2 sc, sc until 2 sc remain, ch 1, skip 1, sc in last st. – {52, (58, 64, 70) sts}
Row 2: Turn, ch 1, sc in first sc, sc in ch-1 sp, sc in each sc across, 2 sc in ch-3.
Row 3: Switch to Color A, turn, ch 3, skip first 2 sc, sc until 2 sc remain, ch 1, skip 1, sc in last st.
Row 4: Turn, ch 1, sc in first sc, sc in ch-1 sp, sc in each sc across, 2 sc in ch-3.
Row 5: Switch to Color B, turn, ch 3, skip first 2 sc, sc until 2 sc remain, ch 1, skip 1, sc in last st.
Row 6: Turn, ch 1, sc in first sc, sc in ch-1 sp, sc in each sc across, 2 sc in ch-3.
Row 7: Switch to Color A, turn, ch 3, skip first 2 sc, sc until 2 sc remain, ch 1, skip 1, sc in last st.
Row 8: Turn, ch 1, sc in first sc, sc in ch-1 sp, sc in each sc across, 2 sc in ch-3.
Row 9: Switch to Color B, turn, ch 3, skip first 2 sc, sc until 2 sc remain, ch 1, skip 1, sc in last st.
Row 10: Turn, ch 1, sc in first sc, sc in ch-1 sp, sc in each sc across, 2 sc in ch-3.
Row 11: Switch to Color A, turn, ch 3, skip first 2 sc, sc until 2 sc remain, ch 1, skip 1, sc in last st.
Row 12: Turn, ch 1, sc in first sc, sc in ch-1 sp, sc in each sc across, 2 sc in ch-3.

Finishing
Make a long chain about 4 times the length of the laced section, plus 12″. Lace the ch-1 spaces together starting at the top of the hat, and tying a bow at the bottom

Weave in all ends.
