This Basic Beret is quick and easy to make. Once you have mastered it, you can add in details such as color work or cables. It’s a great base for your own creativity. It also is lovely just as it is. It can be made with just one skein of Lion Brand Heartland, which has a wonderful shine and comes in a great variety of colors.

Adult Woman – 22″ head

Lion Brand Heartland Worsted weight yarn

US-8, 5.0mm dpn or long circulars for the magic loop
US-7, 4.5mm 16″ circular needles for ribbing.

18 sts x 26 rows = 4” [10 cm] in stockinette with larger needles

Other supplies:
Yarn needle
1 round marker, 6 other markers

Stitches and Abbreviations:
k – knit
k2tog – knit 2 together
m1 – make 1
p – purl
pm – place marker
st(s) – stitch(es)

Getting Started:
Either start with a set of 4 or 5 dpns, or use long circular needles to work with the magic loop. By about round 20 the project should be able to be finished with 16″ long circulars, or it can stay on dpns or the magic loop.

CO 12 sts
Rnd 1: Place round marker, k1, pm, [k2, pm] 5 times, k1.
Rnd 2: [K to marker, m1] 6 times, k1. -{18 sts}
Rnds 3-14: [K to marker, m1] 6 times, k to end. – {90 sts after rnd 14}
Rnds 15-33 odd: K all.
Rnds 16-34 even: [K to marker, m1] 6 times, k to end. – {150 sts after rnd 34}
Rnds 35-39: K all.
Rnds 40-56 even: [K to 2 sts before marker, k2tog] 6 times, k to end. – {90 sts after rnd 50}
Rnds 41-57 odd: K all.
Rnds 58-61: Switch to smaller needles, (k1, p1) around.
Bind off in pattern, weave in all ends using starting tail to sew hole shut.

Block gently.
