I’m so excited that I get to review another Craftsy class taught by my friend Tamara Kelly of Moogly!

Crochet Essentials: Increases & Decreases is a fabulous class for anyone looking to learn more about…wait for it…increases and decreases. 😉

Actually, it is a wonderful class, and is useful to more than just beginners. Of course, if you are a beginner and want to understand various increases and decreases that you may run into in patterns, this is your class! It is also great for those who want to be able to improv patterns, or even new designers looking to understand more about shaping in crochet.

Are you left handed? Don’t worry, most of the techniques are shown in right AND left hand views. Pretty cool!

The class is broken down into 7 lessons, making it easy to watch in small or large sittings. You will learn increases in rows and rounds, basic and advanced decreases, and you will learn it all in sc, hdc, and dc. Tamara shares with you some great tips and tricks, just as she so often does over on Moogly. By the time you have finished the class, you will have such confidence because you just spent a few hours sitting with Tamara, as she taught you all you needed to know about increases and decreases.

To make it even better, there is also a section on increasing and decreasing with posts stitches and in Tunisian crochet, AND another section on chevrons. After all, chevrons are just increase, work a bit, decrease, work a bit, repeat. Tamara has included class materials with some chevron patterns that are both written and charted. I decided to play around a bit with some chevrons after watching her class, and look what I came up with:

I think I will bring this with me on the plane tonight and make it into a scarf! I used one of the basic chevron patterns that Tamara had in her class as a starting point, and just played with it. Those of you who have been following my blog for a while know my affinity for playing around with chevron patterns.

Another awesome bonus of the class is the hat size chart in the materials. While teaching various increases and decreases, Tamara points out how they can be used to make hats. With the skills you will learn, and the hat size chart, you will be able to make hats for everyone! Pretty nifty.

Oh! I learned something new! I have been crocheting for 30 years, and Tamara still managed to teach me something new. OK, it was more of a variation… Tamara teaches how to make an invisible sc decrease, and she teaches it in a way a bit different than the way I have done it in the past. You know what? I like her way better.
