The Catherine’s Wheel crochet stitch is featured in the June section of the Janet’s Garden CAL. It’s actually super easy and fun to make. I’ve wanted to learn this stitch for a while, and I finally had chance. I see more Catherine’s Wheel crochet stitch patterns in my future!

ch – chain
dc – double crochet
sc – single crochet
sl st – slip stitch
sp(s) – space(s)
st(s) – stitch(es)

Stitch counts are at the end of row inside {brackets}. Stitch counts do not include chain stitches unless specified.

Special Stitches:
Double crochet 4 together (dc4tog): Yo, insert hook into st, yo, pull through the st only (3 loops on hook), yo, pull through 2 loops (2 loops on hook), *yo, insert hook into next st, yo, pull through the st only, yo, pull through 2 loops; repeat from * 2 more times (5 loops on hook) yo, pull through all 5 loops. 

Double crochet 5 together (dc5tog): Yo, insert hook into st, yo, pull through the st only (3 loops on hook), yo, pull through 2 loops (2 loops on hook), *yo, insert hook into next st, yo, pull through the st only, yo, pull through 2 loops; repeat from * 3 more times (6 loops on hook) yo, pull through all 6 loops. 

Double crochet 7 together (dc7tog): Yo, insert hook into st, yo, pull through the st only (3 loops on hook), yo, pull through 2 loops (2 loops on hook), *yo, insert hook into next st, yo, pull through the st only, yo, pull through 2 loops; repeat from * 5 more times (8 loops on hook) yo, pull through all 8 loops.

Catherine’s Wheels Crochet Section of Outer Square (All Rounds Right Side)

Rnd 25: Join Color C in any ch-2 corner sp, ch 1, *(sc, ch 2, sc) in ch-2 sp, sc in next st, [skip 3 sts, 7 dc in next st (wheel top made), skip 3 sts, sc in each of next 3 sts] until 7 sts remain before next corner ch-sp, skip 3 sts, 7 dc in next st, skip 2 sts, sc in last st; repeat from * 3 more times, sl st in first sc. – {13 wheel tops on each side}
Fasten off Color C. 

Rnd 26: Join Color E in any ch-2 corner sp, ch 5, dc in ch-2 sp, *dc5tog in ch-2 sp and first 4 sts (half wheel bottom made), ch 3, [sc in each of next 3 sts, ch 3, dc7tog (wheel bottom made), ch 3] across until 7 sts remain before next corner ch-sp, sc in each of next 3 sts, ch 3, dc5tog in last 4 sts and ch-2 sp, (dc, ch 2, dc) in ch-2 sp; repeat from * 2 more times, dc5tog in ch-2 sp and first 4 sts, ch 3, [sc in each of next 3 sts, ch 3, dc7tog, ch 3] across until 7 sts remain, sc in each of next 3 sts, ch 3, dc5tog in last 4 sts and ch-2 sp, sl st to 3rd ch in beginning ch-5. – {(12 wheel bottoms, 2 half wheel bottoms on each side} 

Rnd 27: Sl st in ch-2 sp, ch 1, *(sc, ch 2, sc) in ch-2 sp, 7 dc in next dc5tog, sc in each of next 3 sc, [7 dc in next dc7tog, sc in each of next 3 sc] across until 1 half wheel remains before next corner ch-sp, 7 dc in next dc5tog; repeat from * 3 more times, sl st in first sc. – {14 wheel tops on each side}
Fasten off Color E. 

Rnd 28: Join Color D in any ch-2 corner sp, ch 5, dc in ch-2 sp, *dc4tog in ch-2 sp and first 3 sts (half wheel bottom made), ch 3, [sc in each of next 3 sts, ch 3, dc7tog, ch 3] across until 6 sts remain before next corner ch-sp, sc in each of next 3 sts, ch 3, dc4tog in last 3 sts and ch-2 sp, (dc, ch 2, dc) in ch-2 sp; repeat from * 2 more times, dc4tog in ch-2 sp and first 3 sts, ch 3, [sc in each of next 3 sts, ch 3, dc7tog, ch 3] across until 6 sts remain, sc in each of next 3 sts, ch 3, dc4tog in last 3 sts and ch-2 sp, sl st to 3rd ch in beginning ch-5. – {13 wheel bottoms, 2 half wheel bottoms on each side}

Rnd 29: Sl st in ch-2 sp, ch 1, *3 sc in ch-2 sp, 7 dc in next dc4tog, sc in each of next 3 sc, [7 dc in next dc7tog, sc in each of next 3 sc] across until 1 half wheel remains before next corner ch-sp, 7 dc in next dc4tog; repeat from * 3 more times, sl st in first sc. – {15 wheel tops on each side}
Fasten off Color D. 

Rnd 30: Join Color E to 3rd dc in wheel top just before a corner 3-sc group, ch 1, sc in each of first 3 sts, [ch 3, dc7tog, ch 3, sc in each of next 3 sts] all the way around all 4 sides, sl st in first sc. – {60 wheel bottoms}

Rnd 31: Ch 1, sc in same st and in each of next 2 sts, *2 sc in ch-3 sp before corner, 7 dc in next dc7tog, 2 sc in ch-3 sp after corner, sc in each of next 3 sts, [7 dc in next dc7tog, sc in each of next 3 sc] 14 times; repeat from * 2 more times, 2 sc in ch-3 sp before corner, 7 dc in next dc7tog, 2 sc in ch-3 sp after corner, sc in each of next 3 sts, [7 dc in next dc7tog, sc in each of next 3 sc] 13 times, 7 dc in next dc7tog, sl st in first sc. – {60 wheel tops}
Fasten off Color E.
