Quilt Squares for Janice

So remember how I told you about our friend Janice? She is very sick with cancer and when asked what her friends could do for her, she said she wanted a quilt. I made three squares for the quilt, and Doug made one, also. They have been sent to Rose who will put them together with all the other squares and turn them into a quilt.

I started with a log cabin. I’ve never made one before, but always wanted to. Now after making one square, I would love to do a whole quilt.

After the traditional log cabin, I thought “why not do the same thing with another shape?” So here you have a triangle. Who knows, maybe that log cabin quilt I want to make one day will be hexagons, ’cause we know my fondness for hexagons!

Pardon the random string, the squares were already in the mail before I realized I scanned a random sting with this one.

This square is filled with my love. I have always been so very fond of elephants. They are quite magnificent animals. To make this little pink guy, I first cut the shape out of some lite cardboard ~ I think it was the back of a pad of paper. I laid down a piece of foil, a piece of my fabric ~ right side down ~ and the cardboard template. I then trimmed and clipped the angles. I folded it all around the template, the foil held it nicely in place. Then I ironed it and let it cool. When I peeled off the foil and pulled out the template, I had a wonderful little shape. I then tossed the square in a hoop and tacked down the elephant. I pulled out the silk thread I have from my great-grandmother’s stash, and embroidered the little guy in place. I was very happy with the finished product!

I put my initials on the bottom corner of all my squares so Janice would know who they all were from. Part of the beauty of a quilt like this is knowing who made each square.

It wasn’t necessary for Doug to put his initials on his square, it is very clearly his. Doug has know Janice and her husband, also named Doug, since his late teens. He loves her very much and asked if I could help him make a square. He designed it himself, based off of his Medieval device ~ aka coat of arms. His device has a sash with a wolf on it, and he used that part in his square. I told him how to do it, and he did it all himself. From the pattern to the cutting to the sewing. When it was all put together, he traced the wolf on and we tossed it in a hoop. He then chose some of my silk thread and stitched the wolf on. I just had him do a running stitch all around, then another filling in the gaps. It seemed just a bit more friendly then a backstitch.

So here you have my husbands very first quilt square. Talk about love. I know it will make Janice very happy.

I included a little card from my simple little homemade card stash along with the squares. The envelope is on the left, and the card is on the right.

Have a wonderful weekend, my friends. I plan spending Saturday afternoon helping a friend with some finishing touches on her tea shop she is opening next week, and having a little Super Bowl party on Sunday.
