Spider Placemat – a creepy-crawly way to celebrate Halloween!

What’s that under your plate? It’s a spider!! Celebrate Halloween with these quick and easy to make Spider Placemats, a fun a creepy addition to your holiday decorations. I made mine with an orange background, but you can make a whole set with a different color background for each one, as there are plenty of awesome colors of Lion Brand 24/7 yarn.

Yarn: (per placemat)
Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton, 100% Cotton, worsted weight, 100 g/186 yds
Tangerine 133: Color A – 1 skein, 100 g/186 yds
Black 153: Color B – 1 skein, 35 g/ 65 yds

Hook:
US-7, 4.5mm

Gauge:
16 sts x 18 rows = 4” [10 cm] in sc

Other supplies:
Yarn needle

Stitches and Abbreviations:
ch – chain
sc – single crochet
sl st – slip stitch
sp(s) – space(s)
st(s) – stitch(es)

Getting Started:
One full skein of Color A is used for each placemat, and I only had about 3 yards of yarn left when I finished. To be safe, I recommend buying 1 skein of yarn for each placemat, then 1 extra in case you run out on any of them. Just keep your receipt in case you don’t use it (or add it to your stash!)

Surface Crochet: Insert hook down through front of work and pull up a loop, *insert hook down through front of work one st away and pull loop through everything on hook, repeat from * to end of design, cut yarn from below, pull it through, then sew it back over the outside of the last loop and weave in ends.

Pattern:

Row 1: With Color A, ch 67, sc in 2nd ch from hook and each remaining ch. – {66 sc}
Rows 2-47: Turn, ch 1, sc in each sc across.
Do NOT cut yarn
(piece should now measure 16.5 x 10.5 inches)

Border
Rnd 1: Turn, ch 3, sc in each sc across, ch 2, rotate, 42 sc evenly along side of placemat, ch 2, rotate, 66 sc along bottom of starting ch, ch 2, rotate, 42 sc evenly along side of placemat, sl st to 2nd ch of beginning ch 3. – {216 sc}
Rnd 2: Switch to Color B, sl st into ch-2 sp, ch 3, sc in same ch-2 sp, [sc in each sc across, (sc, ch 2, sc) in ch-2 sp, 3 times, sc in each sc across, sc in ch-2 sp, sl st to 2nd ch of beginning ch 3. – {224 sc}
Rnd 3: Sl st into ch-2 sp, ch 3, sc in same ch-2 sp, [sc in each sc across, (sc, ch 2, sc) in ch-2 sp, 3 times, sc in each sc across, sc in ch-2 sp, sl st to 2nd ch of beginning ch 3. – {232 sc}

Fasten off and weave in all ends.

Spider:
Rnd 1: With Color B, ch 3, sl st to first ch made to form a loop, ch 1 (does not count as a st here or throughout), 6 sc in loop, sl st to fist sc to join. – {6 sc}
Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in next st, 2 sc in each of next 5 sc, sl st to fist sc to join. – {12 sc}
Rnd 3: Ch 1, [2 sc in next st, sc in next st] 6 times, sl st to fist sc to join. – {18 sc}
Rnd 4: Ch 1, sc in next st, [2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 2 sts] 5 times, 2 sc in next st, sc in next st, sl st to fist sc to join. – {24 sc}
Rnd 5: Ch 1, [2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 3 sts] 6 times, sl st to fist sc to join. – {30 sc}
Rnd 6: Ch 1, sc in each of next 2 sts, [2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 4 sts] 5 times, 2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 2 sts, sl st to fist sc to join. – {36 sc}
Rnd 7: Ch 1, [2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 5 sts] 6 times, sl st to fist sc to join. – {42 sc}
Rnd 8: Ch 1, sc in each of next 3 sts, [2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 6 sts] 5 times, 2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 3 sts, sl st to fist sc to join. – {48 sc}
Rnd 9: Ch 1, [2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 7 sts] 6 times, sl st to fist sc to join. – {54 sc}
Rnd 10: Ch 1, sc in each of next 4 sts, [2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 8 sts] 5 times, 2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 4 sts, sl st to fist sc to join. – {60 sc}
Rnd 11: Ch 1, [2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 9 sts] 6 times, sl st to fist sc to join. – {66 sc}
Rnd 12: Ch 1, sc in each of next 5 sts, [2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 10 sts] 5 times, 2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 5 sts, sl st to fist sc to join. – {72 sc}

Finishing
Place spider on center of placemat and sew down with Color B and a yarn needle. Make legs with surface crochet.
