Sub~Floor? What Sub~Floor?

So I have looked up when in the basement before. I actually spent quite some time looking at the joists with the inspector. Yet for some reason, I never really looked at the ceiling/floor above the joists. Maybe then I would have realized why someone put other imitation wood floors all over the first floor on top of the real wood.

See that ceiling; does it look familiar? Here’s the dining room floor again (the one on the left.)

So, I guess 112 years ago, they just slapped that hardwood floor on right over the joists, no sub~floor needed. Now I get why the dining room is so creaky/wobbly/uneven. No sub~floor and 112 years tends to do that, and the dining room is the only room that has not been covered with a sub~floor and then some form of fake wood.

Of course, this means that all the walls are build on top of the hard wood floor. So if we wanted to pull up the floor, put a sub~floor under it, and then put it back down, we would have to remove all the first floor walls first, or cut the floor boards around the walls. This will be fun some day. I’m sure my father has the right answer. However, we have plenty of other things to deal with first.

So…Let me tell you about my Thursday.

big-girl-barrettePin

We had a dentist appointment for the girls at 9am, and in honor of Kyla being such a big girl, I let her wear a big girl barrette.

See how her adult teeth are growing behind the baby teeth? The baby teeth don’t want to leave. So off to the dentist we went. We have a new dentist, and before setting the appointment I had Doug call to make sure everything was set, as he has all the insurance info. Anyway, after filling out all the forms, I got told that the girls had just been added to this dentist’s patient list, and therefor the insurance wouldn’t kick in until July 1st. They assured me that Kyla would be fine, and I could come back on the 5th. So off to the new house we went.

To find the first floor bedroom like this:

I never thought I would be happy about a dropped ceiling with acoustic tile in my house, but in this case, I was. The bathroom is above this room, and I guess whoever renovated it last was lazy. They ran the pluming under the joists, and dropped the ceiling on the  room underneath, hence the acoustic tile ceiling.

Which I found on the floor. In a puddle. So I went next door to “borrow a cup of internet” so I could check Angie’s list for a plumber. I asked for a recommendation from Joanne (the neighbor) first, but she didn’t have one. Thankfully Angie pulled through for me and found a great guy. Turns out there wasn’t a plumbing problem, just a tub fixture that wasn’t properly sealed. He sealed it for me and didn’t charge me.

I was still left with some water damage on the floor/ceiling, luckily the insurance company had already called the flood/fire damage cleanup to come and deal with it.

While we waited, we ran over to the deli on the corner to place an order for subs for our moving day. I picked up my new addiction. That’s right: Espresso Coffee Soda.
Oh.
My.
Goodness.
It is yummy.

I have a feeling I am going to have a problem when the school year starts. After walking the girls to school (.3 miles) I will have a hard time not stopping to pick one of these treats as I walk past the deli on the way home. Oh, trouble.

Still waiting…time to pose.

Kyla is chewing in every picture. Joanne from the deli (different Joanne) gave them each a hard pretzel thingie that I can’t remember the proper name.

After some posing for pictures it was time to play in the castle.

Mommy built a castle on the porch.

It even has a skylight.

So this is what the first floor bedroom looked like from Thursday afternoon until Monday afternoon.

By the time Dave from ServPro (Flood/Fire cleanup) left, the part of the ceiling that had been the wettest was measuring 9.5.
9.5 what I do not know, but I do know that 10 is considered very good, and it had been 24 on Thursday. So we ended up being beyond good. I think I am going to have to make a page here on my blog for totally awesome people I can recommend that I have found since we first started house hunting. I also need to spend some time on Angie’s list writing reviews for all these people. Or maybe I will just call in and let them do the typing. Or I could figure out were I packed the Dragon disk and I could talk~to~type myself.

So that was my crazy Thursday.

Here is something that calms me and makes me happy.

clothes-on-the-linePin

Is it silly that a clothes line makes me happy? This picture is taken from one of my kitchen windows. I just lean out and hang the clothes. The line is on a pulley. For some reason, it is just happiness for me.

Chewy-is-here!Pin

We did the big part of the move on Saturday. With a moving truck and friends. That was the first night we spent here. If you know me, you know Chewy. Up there in the right hand box. He came here with
me on Saturday. He sleeps were I sleep. Once Chewy was here, that meant I was here too.

The neighbors have been slowly introducing themselves. It is a very close~knit street. I love it. You have already heard about the neighbor on one side of us ~ Joanne (and Mark, and their kids Mark, Nick, and Joe.) On the other side is our driveway, and on the other side of the driveway is the backyard of the house on the corner. It is a duplex, Mary Ellen and Mary Ann. Mary Ellen introduced herself during our moving day. Then when the girls and I were in the back yard the other day, Mary Ann came to the short fence to say hi and give us some gifts.

watching-their-new-moviePin

She gave the girls each a DVD/Blue Ray, Snow White and Beauty and the Beast. Here they are watching Beauty and the Beast, very happy about their nice new neighbor.

gift-from-the-neighborPin

She had something nice for Doug and I as well.

Turns out new neighbors are a big deal here. Everyone tends to stay, so new neighbors only happen every 10 years or so. We are quite the big to~do right now.

OK, I have a lot to do and have spent way to much time typing this up. I will try to keep you all updated, but life is rather hectic right now. I am also going to try to get some crafty stuff up as well, but no promises.

Happy Wednesday!

  1. What a great move AND a great post. You are right – the plumber et al will definitely appreciate a review on Angie’s List – just don’t write that the plumber didn’t charge you or everyone will call expecting free stuff :). Say “extraordinarily reasonable” or something. Anyway, it really touched my heart to see Chewy sticking out of that box. *hugs*
