Bavarian Twisted Stitches: Projects & Techniques with Donna Druchunas is a wonderful class. I honestly didn’t know what Bavarian Twisted Stitches were, but the class picture was lovely and I wanted to learn. It turns out they are twisted knit stitches, often worked into cable designs. The twists make the knits stand out even more from the purls, creating very defined and beautiful cables.
Donna begins by teaching you the basic twisted stitch, and having you make some swatches. I made swatches of stockinette in regular knit and in twisted stitches. As you can see, I got impatient after a while and the twisted stitch swatch is rather short. I then made swatches of 1×1 rib in regular and twisted stitches. You can really see the difference. The top swatches are regular knit, and the bottom swatches are the Bavarian twisted stitch swatches (and as I’m editing this post, I notice they are almost all upside down, oh well, top down work!)
After you have the basics down, Donna introduces you to various cable patterns, each building upon the skills of the last. She walks you through them all in such a way that by the time you are on the last swatch you feel like you’ve got this!
Aren’t they fun?! Remember, this is the first time I’ve ever tried this technique, so they may not be perfect, but they are pretty good for something entirely new to me.
I’m quite fond of Donna’s teaching. She has a calming way of speaking that makes you feel like you can do this. She lets you know problems that may arise, and tells you how to handle them. She gives various ways to fix mistakes (and I used them!) Donna is a very thorough teacher. This is an advanced technique, but she took all the intimidation out of it for me. I would highly recommend this class to any knitter looking to improve their skills and add to their bag of tricks.
